Task 2 of IELTS on Feb 3 .2018

題目：

The restoration of old buildings in major cities in the world costs enormous government expenditure .This money can be used in new housing and road development .To what extent do you agree or disagree ?

坡姐範文:

These days,various ways are being taken to protect old buildings because their irreplaceable value has been universally acknowledged .Large sums of money from the government has been allocated in retrofitting those old constructions. But this has aroused great controversy that the government spending should be put in housing and road construction since these two fields are of great significance for a countrys development .However,I do not agree with them .

One of the main reasons ,is that the cultural considerations should take precedence over utilitarian value of those historic buildings.For example ,some traditional buildings uniquely represent specific historic events or have exceptional aesthetic value. Beijing Hutong has been regarded as a symbol of old Beijing ,and even Qing Dynasty .If it cannot be preserved well due to being underfunded ,their art sense would seriously be damaged ,and accordingly the host city and the nation as a whole .

Another convincing point is these ancient buildings are,indeed,believed to be important sources to attract international visitors .The authoritys efforts,both financially and emotionally ,greatly contribute to stimulating the consumption of people，thus boosting the national economy .

Surely ,housing and road development deserve much attention and budget from the government as indispensable parts of infrastructures of a nation . Many modern cities are overcrowded by residential , commercial and recreational architectures. The authority need invest considerable revenue in building more apartments to satisfy the citizens basic demands. Plus , taking into account of the disturbing traffic congestion in almost every metropolis ,adding more roads should be given priority .

However, this does not mean that those old buildings lost their meaning of existence .On the contrary, based on their uniqueness and particularity，the justification of conserving and repairing them is undoubted . Therefore,it is worthwhile for the government to provide financial support to help to protect the precious heritage.
