經典錯誤賞析（一）Ill-Matched Partners

1、問題

下面這篇賞析之作被一位群友分享放到我們Q群里供大家學習，啟初並未留意。後來發現有幾位點贊，也許有質量吧，就打開了。對國人功底不信任也好，對長句心有敬畏也罷，第一遍就帶著放大鏡在讀這個句子。然後又讀了第二遍，第三遍……查了兩本書後決定寫下這篇稿子。

It is important to recognize that the composition and morphology of the material grown is not simply a function of the gas mixture and plasma conditions, but also depends sensitively on the pretreatment of the substrate prior to growth, as well as the substrate temperature.

2、賞析

簡單說吧，我認為這個句子有問題。

這個句子本來是想用一個平行結構的，not simply（only） XXX, but also XXX，用這種形式來倍增單個句子信息容量是很有效的，但執行上似乎出了點兒混亂。

亂在哪兒呢？句子結構平行的不夠嚴謹，或者嚴厲點兒說，根本就不平行。

合理的平行表達有兩種：

• 動詞+not simply XXX but also

例如， I sent a copy not only to my supervisor but also to the head of the division.

• 主語+not simply+動詞1 but also+動詞2

例如，The officers colleagues on the state police force not only respected (動詞1)the men professionally but regarded（動詞2） them as friends.

而這個經典例句則是

It is important to recognize that the composition and morphology of the material grown（A）is not simply a function of the gas mixture and plasma conditions, （B）but also depends sensitively on the pretreatment of the substrate prior to growth, as well as the substrate temperature. （C）

簡化之，A is not simply B，but also depends on C

編造一個有實際內容的例句則可以是 The composition is not simply complex, but also depends on temperature.

拿掉冗長的成分，這個句子的問題似乎凸顯一些了。

你可以說The composition not simply is complex，but also depends on temperature. 其中，前半部分的is和後半部分的depends作為兩個動詞，共用一個主語the composition，沒問題。

或者，The composition is not simply complex，but also dependent on temperature.

這樣的話，兩個平行結構不含有自治的動詞，而只作為共同主謂語the composition is的平行表語，也沒問題。

但兩個表達混著用，就是問題。

3、解

也許是因為論文發在AM上吧，所以這個句子被拿來作為經典，被解析並膜拜。

有點兒諷刺。

當然，有人會說，指出這麼一個偶然出現的問題對很多人寫作的提高並無多大意義。

沒錯，雖然錯誤最容易讓人獲得提高，但一個錯誤大全並不能讓人學習的效率更高。

這裡寫這篇稿子的目的不是為了挑刺兒，而是提請大家注意兩點：

• 發表的論文，不一定語言沒問題
• 如果要模仿，找權威的書籍，盡量不要從論文中直接拿來用
