one-upmanship這個詞我也是第一次見到, 但如果你抓到了前邊的sleep deprivation和上下句的話, 其實意思是很好懂的.

我們先看後綴吧, -ship還挺常見的, 比如

friendship=友情

kinship=親情

fellowship=情誼

-ship的含義大抵是

quality, condition; act, power, skill; office, position; relation between

-manship這個後綴要少見一些, 但也是見過滴, 比如

craftsmanship=精湛的手藝

statesmanship=政治才能

marksmanship=射擊才能

-manship的含義大抵是

skill in a particular activity, especially of a competitive nature

最後我們看one-up

Theyre always trying to one-up each other by buying the latest gadgets.

I just dont see why we have to one-up each other.

這個還挺符合字面意思的, literal meaning的, 就是感覺比對方再多得一分的意思

所以連起來one-upmanship就是試圖比對方更勝一籌的做法

engaged in a round of verbal one-upmanship
