《納斯雷金的故事》（Stories of Nasreddin 是「百萬英語閱讀計劃」MWRP叢書——英漢對照中級英語系列讀物第I輯之14，適合已掌握1500基本英語辭彙量（相當於初中畢業）的英語學習者閱讀。

內容簡介

納斯雷金（Nasreddin），也被尊稱為「先生」（Hodja），是中東和中亞地區民間傳說中的著名人物，被描繪成一個聰明的傻子或者是愚蠢的智者。他的睿智，使他隨時隨地拋出一語道破的笑話。他給人們帶來了不盡的歡樂，也帶來大笑之後的無限回味。

讀著這些風趣幽默的故事，我們會越來越有似曾相識的感覺。原來，阿拉伯世界中的納斯雷金正是響徹漢語世界的那位倒騎毛驢的阿凡提啊！

說明:

1. 關於可讀性：這是根據美國Rudolf Flesch博士的統計方法計算出的Flesch Reading Ease（弗萊士易讀度），計算根據是句子的字數和100個字內音節個數等，數值在0和100之間，數目越大，文章越容易讀。

2. 1500基本辭彙外的單詞不包括由這些詞構成的合成詞（如：schoolboy<=school +boy）和派生詞（如：proudly <= proud + ly）。

3. 專有名詞（人名地名）或由專有名詞派生的辭彙以及感嘆詞不計入生詞。

4. 1500詞外詞數（生詞數）包含重複詞數。比如一個單詞以不同形式出現3次，則按3次統計。

5. 在1500詞外詞條數中，重複的單詞或者一個單詞的不同形式統計為1次。

6. 正文每一千字處都有字數標誌，便於讀者掌握閱讀進度。

7. 1500基本辭彙外的詞在原文部分用粗體顯示，譯文部分用深色粗體，由於翻譯的緣故，兩部分的詞性和意義並不完全對應，僅供參考。

8. 本系列讀物的前三本生詞全部標註，以後只標註兩次，出現兩次以後生詞就不再標註。

1. The Moon or the Sun?

月亮還是太陽

People asked Nasreddin:

人們問納斯雷金：

「Nasreddin, which is more useful, the moon or the sun?」

「納斯雷金，月亮和太陽哪個更有用？」

「Of course the moon is,」 replied Nasreddin.

「當然是月亮咯，」納斯雷金回答說。

「Why?」 asked the people.

「為什麼？」人們問。

「While the sun shines on the earth during daytimes, the moon lights the earth up during the nights.」

「太陽是在白天照到地球的，而月亮卻是在夜晚照亮地球。」

2. Question

問題

「Nasreddin, why do you always answer a question with another question?」

「納斯雷金，你為什麼老是用另一個問題來回答一個問題呢？」

「Do I?」

「我是嗎？」

3. Old Moons

舊月亮

One day Nasreddin Hodja and a friend were admiring the sky and watching a new moon.

一天，納斯雷金先生和朋友在欣賞天空，望著新月。

「Hodja,」 asked the friend, 「what do they do with the old moons?」

「先生，」朋友問，「他們把舊月亮是怎麼處理的？」

「They cut them, and turn them into stars!」

「他們把它們切碎，然後變成星星了。」

4. Down the Stairs

摔下樓梯

One of Nasreddin』s neighbours met him and asked,

納斯雷金的一個鄰居遇到他，問：

「Hodja, last night I was passing by your house and I heard a lot of noise. What was it all about?」

「先生，我昨天晚上路過你家的時候，聽到很吵鬧。是怎麼回事啊？」

「Nothing serious. My wife threw my coat down the stairs.」

「沒什麼大事。我妻子把我的大衣扔下樓梯了。」

The neighbour was puzzled.

鄰居迷惑不解。

「Hodja, how could a coat falling down the stairs make that much noise?」

「先生，大衣從樓梯上摔下來怎麼能那麼響呢？」

「It could if I happened to be in it!」

「要是我碰巧在裡面的話就能那麼響！」

5. Eating Dates

吃棗子

One day the Hodja and his wife were eating dates. Hodja』s wife noticed that the Hodja was eating the dates with their stones.

一天，先生和妻子在吃棗子。先生的妻子注意到先生吃棗子的時候連核都吃了。

「Hodja, why are you eating the dates with the stones?」 she asked.

「先生，你吃棗子為什麼連核都吃了呢？」她問。

「Because when the farmer sold them to me, he weighed them with the stones,」 was Hodja』s explanation.

「因為農夫賣給我的時候，他是連核一塊兒稱的，」先生解釋說。

6. The End of the World

世界末日

A group of philosophers traveled far and wide to find, for many years, the end of the world but could not state a time for its coming. Finally they turned to Nasreddin Hodja and asked him:

一群哲人多年到處旅行，來尋找世界末日，但是都說不清什麼時候能到來。最後他們找到納斯雷金先生，問他：

「Do you know when the end of the world will be?」

「你知道世界末日什麼時候到來嗎？」

「Of course,」 said Nasreddin, 「when I die, that will be the end of the world.」

「當然知道了，」納斯雷金回答說，「我死的時候就是世界的末日。」

「When you die? Are you sure?」

「你死的時候？你說得准嗎？」

「It will be for me at least,」 said Nasreddin.

「至少對我來說是的，」納斯雷金說。
