The Call of the Wild

Chapter 1. Into the Wild

Buck did not read newspapers. So Buck did not know that men had found gold in the North of Canada. Those men needed dogs, strong dogs, like Buck, to get that gold.

Buck lived in a house in California. His master was a judge, Judge Miller. It was a big house and there were many horses and many other dogs. Buck was four years old and he loved his life at the Miller』s place. Sometimes he went swimming or hunting with the Miller boys. Sometimes he went for walks with Mollie and Alice, the two Miller girls. At night, he rested next to the fire in the library with Judge Miller himself.

Buck』s father, Elmo, had also lived at Judge Miller』s place. Elmo was a huge St. Bernard. His mother, Shep, was a Scotch shepherd dog. Buck weighed more than sixty kilos. But with his running and hunting, he was a strong, muscular dog - and had a very happy life.

It was in the fall of 1897 that men found gold in the Klondike. Men came from all over the world to find their fortune. But Buck didn』t read newspapers. He didn』t know about the gold in the Klondike.

There was a gardener who worked for Judge Miller. He loved playing the lottery. The gardener had a wife and many children and he didn』t have a lot of money. He wanted to win the lottery but he needed money to buy the tickets. One night the gardener took Buck for a walk to a park near the train station. He met another man in the park and the man gave the gardener some money. They put a rope around Buck』s neck and Buck trusted them. Until now, Buck had only met good people.

Buck knew something was wrong when the stranger took the rope. He growled to show he was not happy. Suddenly the man twisted the rope and Buck could not breathe. He jumped at the man who threw him to the ground. He twisted the rope more and Buck thought he was going to die.

The men took Buck to the station and when a train came, they threw him inside. When Buck woke up the train was moving. The man was next to him. The man jumped at Buck but Buck was too quick. He bit the man』s hand. The man screamed and there was a lot of blood. The man put his bloody hands around Buck』s neck and held him for a very long time.

Finally, they came to a station and Buck was taken out and put in a wooden box. He stayed there all night with no food or water. Buck didn』t understand who these people were but he knew they were bad people. He wanted to see Judge Miller and his family, but no, they were far away now.

Then Buck』s journey continued: a train, a truck, a boat, another truck, another train... This train continued for two days and two nights. There was nothing to eat, nothing to drink. Buck was angry. The men in the train were very bad to him but there was nothing he could do inside his wooden box. He just got angrier and angrier. His eyes were red and he was ready to fight with anything.

The train finally stopped in Seattle. Four men and a driver carried Buck』s wooden box to a small garden. In the garden was a man with a dirty red pullover. In his hands he had a club and an axe.

「Are you going to open the box now?」 asked the driver.

「Sure,」 the man in the red pullover replied. Then he started breaking open the wooden box with the axe.

The four men and the driver quickly jumped onto a wall. They wanted to watch the man with the red pullover and Buck. They knew that Buck was a very strong and very dangerous dog.

Inside the box, Buck started biting the wood.

「Now you red-eyed devil...」 said the man in the red pullover.

Suddenly there was enough space for Buck to escape from the wooden box. The man put down the axe and held the club in his right hand.

Now Buck really was a red-eyed devil. He wanted to bite the man in the red pullover.

He jumped at the man with all his energy. Suddenly Buck felt a terrible pain on the side of his head. The man had hit him with the club. Buck fell to the ground but he was up again quickly. He jumped at the man again - and once again the man hit him with the club. Twelve times buck jumped at the man. Twelve times the man hit him with the club. Buck had blood coming out of his nose, mouth and ears. His beautiful coat was covered in blood. The man came to him again and hit Buck on the nose with the club. This made Buck angry and he jumped at the man. The man hit Buck with the club and he flew through the air and crashed to the ground. One final time, Buck ran at the man. And one final time the man hit him...

The men on the wall watched Buck, lying on the ground, not moving. 「His name』s Buck!」 called one of the men.

The man in the red pullover went to Buck and touched his head. 「Well, Buck, we had our little fight. Now you know who is the boss here. Be a good dog and all will go well. Be a bad dog - and I』ll kill you.」

Then the man brought some water for Buck to drink. Then Buck ate meat from the man』s hand. Buck was beaten (he knew that) but he was not broken.

In the next few days, more dogs arrived. Some of them quiet, some of the angry like Buck. Some of them accepted their new master. Others would not. Buck watched one dog that would not accept his new master and was killed with the club.

Buck also saw men come and talk to the man in the red sweater. They gave him money and took away one or more of the dogs. Buck wanted to know where they went as they never came back.

Then finally a small man called Perrault came and saw Buck. The man did not speak very good English. 「That is one strong dog. How much?」

「Three hundred dollars,」 said the man in the red sweater.

Perrault looked at Buck and he knew that Buck was one in a thousand - or maybe one in ten thousand.

Buck saw money pass between the two men. Then Buck and Curly, a Newfoundland, were taken away by the little man called Perrault. That was the last time Buck saw the man in the red pullover. It was also the last time he saw the warm Southland.

Buck and Curly were taken to the bottom of the boat. There, they were looked after by a very tall black man called Francois. Buck quickly learnt that Francois and Perrault were not bad people. They also understood dogs very well.

There were more dogs at the bottom of the boat. One of them was a big, snow-white dog from Spitzbergen. Spitz was a friendly dog but it was not real friendship. He smiled at Buck and then stole his food. Buck wanted to jump at Spitz but Francois hit Spitz with his whip.

There was another dog called Dave. Dave was a very sad dog. He did not want to be friends but he didn』t want to steal food. When there were big problems on the boat, Buck and Curly were very frightened. Dave, on the other hand, went to sleep.

Day after day, Buck noticed that the weather was getting colder. One morning, the boat stopped moving. There was an atmosphere of excitement. Francois brought them up to the top of the boat. It was all white. Buck』s feet sank into something like mud. More of the white stuff fell from the sky. Buck tasted it. It tasted like fire but then it disappeared. He tried again with the same result. The men around him laughed. Buck didn』t understand. He had never seen snow before.
