Monica:(pointing at Rachel) De-caff. (to All) Okay, everybody, this is Rachel, anotherLincoln High survivor. (to Rachel) This is everybody, this is Chandler, and Phoebe, and Joey, and- youremember my brother Ross?

Rachel:Sure!

Ross:Hi.

Monica:So you wanna tell us now, or are we waiting for four wet bridesmaids?

bridemaid n.

Rachel:Oh God... well, it started about a half hour before the wedding. I was in thisroom where we were keeping all the presents, and I was looking at this gravyboat. This really gorgeous Lamauge gravy boat. When all of a sudden- (to thewaitress that brought her coffee)Sweet n Lo?- I realized that I was moreturned on by this gravy boat than by Barry! And then I got really freaked out,and thats when it hit me: how much Barry looks like Mr. Potato Head. Yknow, Imean, I always knew looked familiar, but... Anyway, I just had to get out ofthere, and I started wondering Why am I doing this, and who am I doing thisfor?. (to Monica) So anyway I just didnt know where to go, and I know that you and I have kinda drifted apart, but youre the only person I knew wholived here in the city.

gravy n.肉汁/Gravy boat: An elongated, boat-shaped pitcher used toserve gravy. A gravy boat usually sits on a matching plate, which is used tocatch gravy drips. Sometimes the plate is permanently attached to the pitcher.A matching ladle often accompanies a gravy boat. Also called sauce boat.

Lowin fat, sugar alternative to ordinary sweets

pipe organ n.

Rachel:(on phone) Daddy, I just... I cant marry him! Im sorry. I just dont lovehim. Well, it matters to me!

matter vi.

(The scene on TV has changed to show two women, one isholding her hair.)

Chandler: (re TV) Ooh, she should not be wearing those pants.

Joey:I say push her down the stairs.

Phoebe, Ross, Chandler, and Joey: Push herdown the stairs! Push her down the stairs! Push her down the stairs!

(She is pushed down the stairs and everyone cheers.)

Rachel:Cmon Daddy, listen to me! Its like, its like, all of my life, everyone hasalways told me, Youre a shoe! Youre a shoe, youre a shoe, youre a shoe!.And today I just stopped and I said, What if I dont wanna be a shoe? What ifI wanna be a- a purse, yknow? Or a- or a hat! No, Im not saying I want you tobuy me a hat, Im saying I am a ha- Its a metaphor, Daddy!

metaphor:analogy n.隱喻 類比/I』m not saying I want you to buy me a hat, it』s a metaphor: shoe 就是鞋子的意思。下文 "its a metaphor",是個比喻!

Ross:You can see where hed have trouble.

You can see where hed havetrouble:Apparently, we can tell that Rachs dad made fun of Rachs metaphor bysaying "buy her a hat", and pretended that he didnt know what Rachwas talking about. But whats even worse is that Rach didnt get her dadslittle trick either. So she yelled at the phone that "Its ametaphor,Daddy!". Once she realized how rude and unladily she was justnow, her eyes met with Rosss, which made Ross rather embarrassing. So he endedup saying that "You can see where hed have trouble." That means"you can see misunderstanding your metaphor is where hed have trouble tocommunicate with you smoothly. /Are you in trouble

Rachel:Look Daddy, its my life. Well maybe Ill just stay here with Monica.

Monica:Well, I guess weve established whos staying here with Monica...

Well, I guess weve establishedwhos staying here with Monica:Monica has no idea whyRachel said that. But she cant just abandon Rach at this critical time, sowhen her friends turned to her for a verification, she cant think of nothingto say except that: "Well, it seems to Rachel that I have already agreedon the whole moving in thing( that is established an agreement on her movingin), although I have nothing to do with it!!(Dont look at me in this weirdway, guys!)"

Rachel:Well, maybe thats my decision. Well, maybe I dont need your money. Wait!!Wait, I said maybe!!

Well, maybe I dont needyour money." Wait!!Wait, I said maybe!"

[Time Lapse, Rachel is breathing into a paper bag.]

Monica:Just breathe, breathe.. thats it. Just try to think of nice calm things... Phoebe:(sings) Raindrops on roses and rabbits and kittens小貓, (Rachel and Monica turn to look at her.) bluebells野風信子 and sleighbells雪橇 and-something with mittens棒球or拳擊手套... La la la la...something and noodleswith string. These are a few...

Rachel:Im all better now.

Phoebe:(grins and walks to the kitchen and says to Chandler and Joey.) I helped!

grin n.

Monica:Okay, look, this is probably for thebest, yknow? Independence. Taking control of yourlife. The whole, hat thing.

be for the best I know its hard for you to leave him, but its for the best.

Joey:(comforting her) And hey, you need anything, you can always come to Joey. Meand Chandlerlive across the hall. And hes away a lot.

Me and Chandlerlive right across the hall. 按語法講,Joey應該說 Chandler and I… (And he』s away lot)"。

Monica:Joey, stop hitting on her! Its her wedding day!

而這裡的hiton someone 的意思是"和某人調情,或挑逗某人", 相當於flirt with someone,作個小小的總結:hit onsomeone/flirt with someone/ to make a pass at someone/ to come on to someone 例如:"Did you see the way Brian came on to Sally at the office party?"/"Oh,Brian has made a pass at every girl in the office."/"I know, but hehit on Sally particularly hard." /Joey, stop hitting on her! : Slang, to payunsolicited(adj. 不必要的)sexual attention to

注意:Hit on sb. /come on to sb./pass atsb./crash on sb:

Joey:What, like theres a rule or something?

難道還有什麼明文規定不成?(What, like theres a rule or something?)。

的幾種說法: have the hots for someone/be stuck on someone/have ones cap set for someone/fall for

(The door buzzer sounds and Chandler gets it.)

buzzer n.

Chandler: Please dont do that again, its a horrible sound.

Paul:(over the intercom) Its, uh, its Paul.

overthe intercom: communication system linking different rooms

Monica:Oh God, is it 6:30? Buzz him in讓他進來!

Buzz him in:buzz就是按樓房的防盜門時發出的聲音,這樣用法又簡單,又形象 /Buzz him in: makea signal using the buzzer to let him in

Joey: Whos Paul?

Ross:Paul the Wine Guy, Paul?

Monica:Maybe. Joey: Wait. Your not a real date tonight is with Paul the WineGuy?

Ross:He finally asked you out?

Monica:Yes!

Chandler: Ooh, this is a Dear Diary moment.

this is a Dear Diary moment:西方人寫日記一開頭總愛寫Dear Diary,...... /ohh, this is a DearDiary moment: whenAmericans keep the diary(n.日記),normally, the first words theywrite down must be 「Dear Diary」, apparently, Chandler mocksMonica that she is so attracted to Paul with his stereotyped(adj.

Monica:Rach, wait, I can cancel...

Rachel:Please, no, go, thatd be fine!

Monica:(to Ross) Are, are you okay? I mean, do you want me to stay?

Choke v.

Monica:(horrified) Really?

eyelash n.睫毛/I just pull out four eyelashes: thefringe of hair edging the eyelid(n.眼瞼).Usually used in plural(adj.

(Monica goes to change

Rachel:Well, I was kinda supposed to be headed for Arubaon my honeymoon, so nothing!

be headedfor v.

Ross:Right, youre not even getting your honeymoon, God.. No, no, although, Aruba, this time of year... talk about your- (thinks)-big lizards... Anyway, if you dontfeel like being alone tonight,Joey and Chandlerare coming over to help me put together my new furniture.

Lizard n.

Chandler: (deadpan) Yes, and were very excited about it.

deadpan n.無表情的臉/Deadpan: a completely expressionless face

Rachel:Well actually thanks, but I think Imjust gonna hang out here tonight. Its been kinda a long day.

hang out here:呆在這兒。

it been kinda a long day:完成時態,因為RACH又逃婚,有被老爸罵,這一天過得很痛苦,所以也就很漫長

Ross:Okay, sure.

Joey:Hey Pheebs, you wanna help?

Phoebe:Oh, I wish I could, but I dont want to.

Here Chandlermade a comparison of the longevity of his and Joeys relationship to thelasting of Mento, emphasizing the shortness of their relationship with othergirls, which acts kinda as a comfort to Ross.

Ross: You know what thescariest part最糟的部分 is? What iftheres only one woman for everybody, yknow? I mean what if you get one woman-and thats it? Unfortunately in my case, there was only one woman- for her...

Joey:What are you talking about? One woman? Thats like saying theres only one flavor口味 of icecream for you. Lemme tell you something, Ross. Theres lots of flavors outthere. Theres Rocky Road, and Cookie Dough制甜酥餅乾麵糰, and Bing! You could get emwith Jimmies, or nuts核果, or whipped cream生奶油! This is the best thing that ever happenedto you! in bound of holy matrimony:結為夫婦,在神聖婚姻的約束,範圍內

Rachel:Oh...see... but Joanne loved Chachi! Thats the difference!

Oh...see... but Joanne lovedChachi! Thats the difference! :What Rachel said is funnyis because Rachel here was sarcastic about her running away from altar. She wasdeeply moved by the true love between Joanne and Chachi which leads to asuccessful holy matrimony, while she and Barry had almost everything but loveand that results in her disappointment in their matrimony. So she felt right tohave escaped from a doomed marrige with a person she would never love.

[Scene: Rosss Apartment, theyre all sitting aroundand talking.]

Ross:(scornful) Grab a spoon. Do you know how long its been since Ive grabbed aspoon? Do the words Billy, dont be a hero mean anything to you?

Billy dont be a hero 這是一首著名的70年代反戰歌曲,描寫的是越戰中,一個女孩希望自己的fiance Billy平安歸來,dont be a hero in the war,但最後Billy還是在戰爭中失去了他年青的生命. (Billy, dont be a hero)」。 這裡羅斯把找新女友比喻成上戰場 /Do the words』 Billy, don』t be a hero』 meananything to you? : A hit(n.歌曲) by BoDonaldson and the Heywoods in1974, written about a young man namedBilly who headed to Vietnam War and had to leave his lovely fiancée(n.<法>未婚妻).Here, I assume, Ross likens it to(與……相比) his tragic love affair in a sappy(adj.精力充沛的,易動感情的)manner, you know, his wife is alesbian

Monica:Oh wait, wait, unless you happened to catch the Reruns production of Pinocchio.

rerun n.

/oh, wait, wait, unless you happened tocatch the rerun』s production of Pinocchio, atthe little theater in the park… look, Gippetto, I』m a real liveboy. I willnot take this abuse: haha, adventure of Pinocchio, betcha(=bet you) you know!;Gippetto is the old carpenter who creates Pinocchio, when the wooden structureis done, the first words said by Pinocchio are 「I』m a real live boy!」; take abuse means you recoil(vi.畏縮) as to someone else』s language offense(n.

Monica:What for?=forwhat

Rachel:Im gonna go get one of those (Thinks) job things.

(Monica exits.)

[Scene: Iridium, Monica is working as Frannie enters.]

Frannie:Hey, Monica!

Monica:Hey Frannie, welcome back! How was Florida?

Frannie:You had sex, didnt you?

Monica:How do you do that?

Frannie: So? Who?

Monica:You know Paul?

Frannie:Oh yeah, I know Paul.

Monica:You mean you know Paul like I know Paul?

Frannie:Are you kidding? I take credit forPaul我給Paul打保票. Yknow before me, there was no snap inhis turtle for two years.

take creditfor因... 海龜/there wasno snap in his turtle for two years.

The "snap in his turtle" refers to sexual performance, its kind of a "clean" way of saying a vulgar idea (also known as aeuphemism). A man who has no snap in his turtle is impotent; or, unable to havean erection.

I do have an idea on how it was created. "Snap,"of course, has many meanings, but most of them have to do with making a quick, sudden movement (or sound), often of a closing or biting nature. In North America, there is an animal known as a"snapping turtle," which is a type of turtle that is known to bite(or "snap") humans and other animals. From what I have heard, if oneof those things bites you, it hurts a lot. Now, if one of these turtles cantsnap, then theres not so much to fear--if they cant bite you, they cant hurtyou. A snapping turtle with no (abilty to) snap, then, is powerless, and fromthere the slang was created. The word "impotent," aside from itssexual definition, also means "without power." In the case of"Friends," they decided to use the word "turtle" in thisway, and so a turtle without "snap" is understood by Franny andMonica to mean a man without (sexual) power or capability. /are you kidding? I take credit for Paul, you know beforeme, there was no snap inhis turtle for two years. : if A takes credit for B,that means B isindebted to(負債的,感激的) A; here snap means vigor(n.精力,活力),while turtle is a vulgar expression to refer to male』s genitalia ,i.e. penis or peepee

[Scene: Central Perk, everyone but Rachel is there.]

Joey:(sitting on the arm of the couch)Of course it was a line!

Line一詞也可作為俚語解釋,字意為:「onesusual way of talking, esp when being persuasive or self-aggrandizing」,這不正是"the wine guy" Paul的狐狸真面目(as rosssaid, to get women to go to bed by acting patheticly)?

A line is a phrase tend to say to several people. Its aphrase designed to get what they want. Sometimes people have a line they use toget girls and its called a "pick-up line." people also have linesthey might use if they are businessmen and want you to buy something. its notalways a lie but its almost always some exaggeration.

About LINE

In a restaurant

Gavin: … And I hope you』ll accept my invitation fornightcap, without any superfluous qualms.

Sheila: No, really, I can』t. My friends are expecting me.

Gavin: The Hotel is midway between there and here.

His Hotel. What a line! Did he ever actually succeed withit? Of course he did. …… (Sheila)

注釋為:What a line! /ofcourse, it was a line: glib(adj. 不真誠的) talk,usually intended to deceive or impress

Monica:Why?! Why? Why, why would anybody do something like that?

Ross:I assume were looking for an answer more sophisticated than to get you intobed.

Monica:Is it me? Is it like I have some sort of beacon that only dogs and men withsevere emotional problems can hear?

beacon n.

Phoebe:All right, cmere, gimme your feet. (She starts massaging them.)

Phoebe:Youre welcome. I remember when I first came to this city. I was fourteen. Mymom had just killed herself and my step-dad was back in prison, and I got here, and I didnt know anybody. And I ended up living with this albino guy who was, like, cleaning windshields outside port authority, and then he killed himself, and then I found aromatherapy. So believe me, I know exactly how you feel.

step-dad n. 芬芳的/andI ended up living with this albinoguy who…: end up means finally be or do something; deficient(adj.

Rachel:I dont think so.

Rachel:Yknow what? I think we can just leave it at that. Its kinda like a symbolic gesture...

Monica: Rachel! That was a library card!

All:Cut, cut, cut, cut, cut, cut, cut..

Chandler: (as Rachel is cutting up her cards) Yknow, if youlisten closely, you can hear a thousand retailers scream.

(She finishes cutting them up and they all cheer.)

Monica:Welcome to the real world! It sucks. Youre gonna love it!

Rachel:No, you have it, really, I dont want it-

Ross:Split it?

Rachel:Okay.

Ross:Okay. (They split it.) You know you probably didnt know this, but back in highschool, I had a, um, major crush on you.

crush vt.壓碎, 碾碎, 壓服/have a crush on sb.

即:if you are a crush on someone, you are in love with them but do nothave a relationship with them./splitit? O.K. I had a major crush on you: an intense and usually passinginfatuation.(n.
