Week 10: What Are We All Doing Here?

Its always good to step back and reflect. The WWC has been far more successful than I couldve imagined. So its a good time to think about how to make it better.

This weeks theme was The Weekly Writing Club. I asked the members for feedback and Id like to share several of the responses.

Whats your favorite part of the Weekly Writing Club? Why?

My favorite part of the Weekly Writing Club is reading others views and understandings regarding the given topics. Reading through their writing is always a good experience. The club also encourages me to start English writing, which I havent been doing for quite a while. I do write several emails each week at work, but I dont consider those as writing practice.

Is it possible for this club to invite some members from other countries? That way we can learn about these members ideas and views regarding certain topics. Since they grow up in the different backgrounds, we can hopefully see some fun or special responses to the writing topics. I hope to, not only practice my English writing from time to time, but also broaden my worldview. It would be great if the WWC is an international one. Maybe you can also try posting it on Quora simultaneously?

Brian: Inviting foreigners: definitely an interesting idea. If you know anybody whod like to join, feel free to invite them, regardless of where theyre from. Ive also told a couple friends about WWC. Im not very active on Quora, but I can give it a shot when I have time. I can also try posting the writing on Medium. Does anyone have any ideas about how to automate posting to all these different sites?

What does the Weekly Writing Club desperately need?

I』m glad to be one of the WWC and appreciate what you have done. I learn from what youve corrected, but being here only makes me and you connected. The WWC is like a two-level tree structure model, you are the root, and each other person is a leaf. I could know others only by their occasional published writings. It doesn』t fell like other clubs I』ve taken part in where most of the members know and help each other. This relationship is loose and the others leave no impression on me. As I』m concerned, the first thing the WWC desperately need is a connection between all members. If all of us are connected, picking, correcting, and publishing job could be done by anyone. Lots of ideas could occur, and you can be released from the pressure.

And the other thing makes me troubled is the weeks theme. Most of the time, I have nothing to share about the theme even though I want to talk about something else. I wonder if the WWC could have a column named "whatever you want to say". Members can look through all contributions and vote for what they like. The top writing will be published. Or there could be a wide range topic, like economics, IT, sports, etc. It makes the WWC a small-scale magazine and the number of contributions could grow.

Brian: Totally agree with you. Several people have mentioned that theyd like to connect with other members. Truthfully, thats was my original goal anyways. But I decided that creating a curated experience would be a good way to attract serious members. My next step is to set up a Disqus forum where we can post and discuss more openly. @素問 also suggested that I create a WeChat group for the WWC. I think its a great idea and Id be open to anyone volunteering to moderate it. On another note, I think therere two things that I didnt explain very well 1) members can write about any of the past topics, it doesnt have to be the ones I posted that week, 2) members are encouraged to submit their own writing prompts. I also hope that once we have a forum, well have a wider range of topics being discussed in parallel.

Whats your favorite part of the Weekly Writing Club? Why?

My favorite part of the Weekly Writing Club is the many kinds of funny topics and feedback from Brian. But the best part is that we are not compelled to write something and there is no correct answer in this club. Everyones responses are amazing. So I have no pressure in this club; I feel very relax and happy. Furthermore, thanks to Brians edits, Im more conscious of the nature of my writing errors and how I can fix them.

Brian: The funniest thing is that the most common mistake I fixed is the spelling of my name =)
