(Are you someone who just talks the talk , or also walks the walk?)」

How I Became A Person Who Can

Drive And Deliver Results!

There』s an expression for this in English. Are you someone who just talks the talk, or also

walks the walk?

Actually growing up, I was shy. So I wasn』t

someone who talked the talk at all. I rarely spoke out and made claims about

what I could do. Later, because I wasn』t so confident in my capabilities as a

professional, I rarely walked the walk either. I wasn』t someone who got

involved or did much beyond what was asked of me.

In my mid-20s though, my view of myself changed in a big way. Suddenly, I

developed a desire to become something much better than I was and pursue something

meaningful and significant with my life. I wanted to be someone who could talk

the talk, and walk the walk. However, I was far from being such a person then.

Gradually, I became one. To achieve this, here are four things I did.

  • Develop a can-do

    attitude

For me, the biggest obstacle for doing and achieving many things was myself. If

I was going to go after things and make them happen, I knew I had to have a more

positive attitude. For most people, their mindset is too negative. They always have their doubts and excuses why

something can』t happen. So the first step is changing how you view things.
  • Acknowledge

    my fear and doubts –
The biggest reason I rarely took on challenges

was because I was always afraid of failing. What if I made stupid mistakes? What

if I embarrass myself? This held me back from not only getting involved, but even

    from just sharing my ideas.

My big breakthrough

came when I realized that even highly successful people fail sometimes. They

don』t enjoy it any more than the rest of us. The difference is they recognize that

failing is part of the process of learning, finding solutions, and attaining a

result. As soon as I was able to accept that not everything I did would go

well, and that this wasn』t always viewed as a terrible thing, I became much

more proactive about taking on new challenges.

  • Recognize

    and value who I am
    – As I always tell our young staff, you are who

you are. You may not be the smartest, most capable, most experienced person in

the room, but each one of you has your talent and strengths. And each one of

you has the ability to work hard and improve. As your employer, I recognize

these things. So you should too, and just go for it.

That』s what I did. I

told myself that I just had to just trust myself and who I was. Although I

lacked confidence and experience, I was pretty sure I was reasonably smart.

Mostly though, I was willing to work hard and sincere in my desire to help

others attain a great result or better outcome.

  • Recognize

    and value my intentions
    – I discovered something interesting when I tried

my best to contribute to a situation. People appreciated my effort and gave me

a lot of support. So whenever I』d take some initiative and offer my help to a

situation, my efforts were always reciprocated. Even if I wasn』t sure how to do

something, I』d always get whatever guidance and advice that was available from

    others.

Many people are critical and negative.

They whine and complain. So just the fact that you』re offering more help than

most others, you』re already separating yourself from them to your boss,

management, and colleagues. As a CEO, I can tell you that I really appreciate

anyone who tries to provide their value and benefit to me, their team, and our

company.

Of course,

your ability to do things also involves developing certain skills and

capabilities. You need to learn processes, good habits, and sound approaches to

doing things. But from my own experience early on and from my view as a CEO

now, the critical thing for most people is just getting yourself to fully

commit to and get involved in the tasks and challenges you face. And the

biggest factor for doing this has to do with your mindset and attitude. If these

are good, then so will your ability to become someone who can both talk the

talk and walk the walk.
