4Tricky Questions You Should Be Prepared Answer During Interviews

Youwere selected for an interview! That』s great! But hold on. Before thecelebration begins, you need to prepare for the interviews and that includesthinking of what questions you may be asked. We』ve listed out four questions(with responses) to help you prepare:

1. Whyare you applying to our program?

Youwill definitely be asked 「Why our program」 question. If your family lives intown, this is the easiest explanation. But what if it is not the case? Do yourdue diligence and find out what this program takes pride in. For example, notall programs have fellowships but those that do feel special. You may say thatyou are interested in getting a fellow position in the same place because bythen you would have known the faculty and you wouldn』t have to move.

Ifthe program doesn』t have fellowship you may want to think about what attractsyou in the area. Say, the town is close to a big city; it is on the East Coast;your friends or a partner already lives here. Your interviewers know that ifthere is something that keeps you in the area you would rank their programhigher. Don』t think this is a weak reason for your choice. Residency applicantsare adults and job placement or a program』s reputation are no longer the onlyreasons for choosing a program. You have ties with families, significant othersand long-term friends at this point and program director understand that thismatters to you. Just make sure that you mention that you have applied to allprograms in this area to be able to compare them if you want to convince yourinterviewers that you are very attracted to the area.

2. Why you?

SometimesProgram Directors will ask you provocative questions like 「I have 500 people tointerview and they all have excellent credentials, why should I choose you overthem?」 Don』t get scared or puzzled. Just go over the points in your resume thatyou think help you bring something special to the table and be confident. Thesequestions are meant to test how you deal with stress and NOT why they actuallyshould choose you. They will make up their mind eventually, but this will happenwithout you in the room.

3. Medical Questions

Facultymay also ask you medical questions. This is not common but it does happen. Inmost cases they are genuinely interested in a topic you are discussing and wantto know the details. It is also possible that they might spot a discrepancy inyour responses and just want to make sure you didn』t misspeak. When asked amedical question, don』t panic. Just take a moment, think about it and say whatyou know. Don』t try to impress them with some extraordinary insights and don』tshut down completely. After all, your interviewers went through the sameprocess once upon a time and know very well that this may be a stressfulexercise for you.

4. Tell me about a clinical case.

「Tellme about a clinical case that made an impression on you?」?—?you may often hearfrom a Program Director. In answering this question, think of a case youACTUALLY witnessed yourself from your observership/research/volunteering days.Don』t make up a story about how you once saw a bleeding child on the street ora senior with an Alzheimer』s disease who couldn』t remember her name. Whilethese stories may make great scenes for Hollywood blockbuster films they areusually not very convincing. So think about a case you observed, analyze why itwas noteworthy, extract some thoughts that help you connect this case with yourspecialty and tell your story.

Aswith any interview you should always be prepared, but don』t stress yourself outto much. After all, you』ve made it this far and no one wants you to fail. Butthat doesn』t mean they won』t have some tricky questions waiting for you.
