The One Quality That Helped Me Overcome

The Worst Time In My Career

You never plan the difficult

times you face in your career, but they happen.

I have to admit that I』ve managed to face and overcome some extremely tough

challenges and times over my own career, ever since I first started pursuing

bigger career goals for myself early on. Still, most people who know me describe me as

a positive person. Whenever I』m asked how

I manage to stay so positive, even in the face of huge adversity, I respond

with just a single word, gratitude.

I』m fortunate to be part of a

family of hardworking and humble role models.

They include my grandmother, my mom, and my uncles. Each has overcome great difficulties to

achieve unique, inspiring success. Whenever they met disappointments and

setbacks, they never blamed others for their misfortunes or lack success at the

time. Instead, they seemed to always be aware

of how lucky they were to even be in their situation and have the opportunity

to do what they aspired to do. That feeling of gratitude for what they had never left them.

So starting from my mid-20s, even when I felt inadequate and outright depressed

about my career situation, I was also able to feel that gratitude about my

life. I was able to avoid feeling sorry

for myself. Rather than focus on all the

things I didn』t have, I was able to stay positive, remain persistent, and put

my energy into what I needed to do to improve my situation.

For instance, early in our

history, my company had just grown to five offices in both the U.S. and

China. We had just finished our best

year, so we were expanding aggressively. Then disaster struck! The internet bubble burst and almost

overnight the hiring market collapsed.

Clients stopped hiring. Some stopped paying. Offers

to our candidates were withdrawn. Within

six months, we went from nearly 50 to five employees and one office. Half the time I couldn』t pay salaries or just office rent

at the end of the month. It was painful.

Every morning, I』d wake up

and immediately feel the dread of facing my situation. What got me out of bed each day though was

reminding myself that my

company wasn』t dead yet. I still had it, and I still had the ability to do

something about my situation. I still

had a couple of capable, loyal employees.

Physically, I was healthy and still able to work my ass off. And no matter what happened my family

and friends were going to support no matter what

happened to me and whatever I decided to do. I know it sounds simplistic, but this is how

I was able to keep going and turn my situation around at that time. But in the very

worst, most challenging time of my career, it was my ability to appreciate the

fortunate things that I had in my life, and remind myself that there are far

worse situations and things that a person could be facing. This is what kept me going and allowed me to

keep moving forward.

It』s easy to point the finger

at others for why you don』t have something that you feel you deserve. And it』s easy to become negative and cynical

about your situation, and why you』re in it.

However, when you』re facing and trying

to overcome big career challenges, you need to channel everything you have

towards pursuing your objective.

Anything less and you』re not going to succeed

and attain what you want. Reminding yourself of the things that

you have gratitude for will help keep you positive. It will help you regain your perspective and

calm you down so you can continue to pursue what it is you desire to achieve in

your career. Sometimes, you just need to

find a way to keep going. In my

experience, remembering that there』s more

that』s good about your situation than bad can make all

the difference.
