Hip Hop發展靠「停電」，膩害了！

今天給大家講一個 Hip Hop 歷史上很有名的小事件…… 哦不對，你可能沒聽說過，也絕對不是「小」事件，因為它可是影響了整個 Hip Hop 歷史文化發展的催化劑——

1977 紐約大停電

在1977年的夏天前，Hip Hop 作為一種新興的藝術形式還在起步階段，也僅限於在紐約布朗克斯南區的居民家庭聚會和公園中能看到。這種藝術形式也只是被一小部分的傳奇人物所表演和發展著，像是Grandmaster Caz and the Cold Crush Brothers, Grandmaster Flash and the Furious 5, DJ Kool Herc, Busy Bee, Afrika Bambaataa, Sheri Sher, Mean Gene and Red Alert 等。

當然，如果沒有1977年那個夏天的 NYC Blackout 紐約大停電，Hip Hop 的發展可能至少還會延遲上好多年。根據 Grandmaster Caz 在 Yes Yes Y』all 書中所說,

「During the looting, everybody stole turntables and stuff. Every electronics store imaginable got hit. Every record store. That sprung a whole new set of D.J.』s.」

在那場打劫中，大家偷調音台那些設備，每家電子商店可想而知都中招了，還有唱片店。之後湧現了大批有新設備的DJ。

什麼是紐約大停電？1977年7月13日，一道閃電擊中了紐約電廠的傳送裝置線，這看起來是非常普通的事，什麼都照常運作著，直到第二道閃電再次擊中設備，電路開始自動關閉，並且引起了連環影響，最後名為 Big Allies 紐約最大的發電機停工了。整個紐約陷入一片黑暗之中，並且整整持續了25小時。

那晚上，DJ Grandmaster Caz 和他的搭檔 Disco Wiz 正在一個公園裡放音樂，他們的音響設備則連著路邊的燈柱。Caz 回憶那晚說:

「The record just started slowing down, you know what I mean? So, quite naturally, we thought, it was us. We thought we had drained too much power and we shorted out the electricity. So we』re frantic, we』re looking around, we』re checking buttons, were checking switches, we』re seeing what』s up.」

音樂漸漸慢下來，你懂我在說什麼嗎？所以很自然地，我們以為是我們用電過度而短路了。我們有點抓狂，在周圍找了一下其他的按鈕開關，看看到底發生了什麼。

但是 Caz 和 Wiz 發現這並不是短路。紐約是在這次停電的中心，並且周圍5個區很快都同時沒了電源，他們一下子意識到事態的嚴重了。Caz 回憶說：

「The stores started to close. Like the local bodegas on each corner—we would hear the gates slamming down. It was like they knew what was happening, they knew what was going on, they was like, 『We closing up now.』 」

商店開始關店。就像當地街角上的小店，我們聽到了猛烈關門的聲音，像是他們知道之後會發生什麼一樣，表示「我們現在立馬關了。」

1977年的紐約正面臨著嚴重的財政危機。其實紐約在1975年時已經危機四伏，除了極度惡化的財政狀況，犯罪活動也十分猖獗，基礎設施破壞嚴重，城市罷工層出不窮。當時的總統 Gerald Ford 福特 因為此現象是政策問題而表示拒絕救援，導致 New York Daily News 紐約日報 很激進地寫了一篇世界聞名的新聞頭條：

其實福特從來沒有讓「紐約去死」，但是這個行為讓大多數紐約市民這麼認為，特別是在布朗克斯區，人們感到自己就是被拋棄了。公眾節目被切斷，縱火猖狂，大多數人陷入貧困，鄰里社區變成荒地，房屋開始被焚燒推到。Joe Schloss, 紐約城市大學的 Hip Hop 文化研究者說, 1977年的紐約城就像是個炸藥桶，等著一些因素去引爆。

「It was chaos that night. And it was exciting afterwards. But while it was going on, it was scary.」

那個晚上一片混亂。停電後一開始大家都非常興奮，但是之後一切變得很恐怖。

New York Post 紐約郵報 中一位叫 Leonard Greene 的記者寫道：

"In one Bronx dealership, thieves drove off with 50 cars valued at about $200,000. In Bedford-Stuyvesant, cops caught one man with 300 sink stoppers and another with a case of clothespins. The street got so bad the soon, even the looters were being mugged."

在布朗克斯的一家車店，被搶掉了50多輛價值20萬美金的車。在 Bedford-Stuyvesant，警察抓到一個人偷了300個水槽塞，還有一盒衣夾。街道很快變得很亂，甚至連搶劫者都開始被搶劫。

Caz 相信，1977年紐約大停電大大地加速了 Hip Hop 運動的發展，某種意義上說，它是在布朗克斯南區放下的種子。正如文章開頭 Caz 描述的，這次事件引發的搶劫讓買不起調音台和混音器的人成為了 DJ。Caz 同時也承認，他在那晚偷了新的設備。

「I went right to the place where I bought my first set of DJ equipment, and I went and got me a mixer out of there. After the blackout, all this new wealth … was found by people and they just—opportunity sprang from that. And you could see the differences before the blackout and after.」

我立馬去了我第一次買 DJ 設備的地方，拿了個混音器就走。在大停電之後，這些新的財富… 人們發現了它們，也湧現了很多機會。你可以看到大停電前後有很多轉變。

az 還提出，「1977年大停電是 Hip Hop 運動興起的催化劑」，這也是為什麼 rap 會在70年末興起的原因之一。這理論是否正確？前面提到的紐約城市大學 Hip Hop 文化研究者 Joe Schloss 說：

「I think it』s true, but I think it』s also important to keep in mind that basically, hip-hop history is an oral history at this point, and that it』s all mythology in some sense—the true stories as well as the false stories.」

我認為這是事實。但我認為，這體現了 Hip Hop 歷史是口述歷史的重要性。同時，某些方面也像神話故事一樣，真實故事也可能是反面例子。
