Another piece of Irish culture is the Claddagh ring, which is one of the most romantic symbols in the world.

"Claddagh" was a small fishing village close to Galway, Ireland. Now it has become part of Galway City. This is where the claddagh ring originated.

Claddagh, Ireland (Winter) by Mark E Tisdale

The Story

The story goes that in Claddagh, a young man and a young woman fell in love. But the man was captured and enslaved. While in captivity, he learned how to work with gold. Inspired by his love in Claddagh, he took bits of gold from his master to make a ring for her. He made two hands to represent friendship, a crown for loyalty, and of course a heart for love. When he was finally set free, he went back to his love in Claddagh with his ring for her, desperately hoping she was still waiting for him. Of course she was, so he gave her the ring and the two were married.

Since then, the Claddagh ring has become a symbol of love for the Irish and people who like Irish culture. It can also be worn different ways to show your romantic availability and relationship status:

Single

If you are single and looking for a relationship, you would wear the Claddagh ring on your right ring finger with the heart pointing outwards, towards your fingertip.

Taken

If you are in a relationship, which means you have a boyfriend or girlfriend, you would wear the Claddagh ring on your right ring finger with the heart pointing inwards, towards your heart, to indicate your heart is taken.

Engaged

When you get engaged, you should ask your fiancé(e) to move your Claddagh ring to your left ring finger. The heart should be pointing outward, towards your fingertip because there is still one more step to go.

Married

Finally, on your wedding day, your husband or wife can change the direction of your Claddagh so the heart points towards your heart. Congratulations! You made it to the final stage of commitment in your relationship!

Hopefully, rom now on, you and your partner will be best friends, lovers, and loyal companions until the end of your days, to match what the symbols in the Claddagh ring represent.

Thats the story and symbolism of the Claddagh ring.

Do you like it? Would you get one for your love? Just make sure you understand how to wear it before you do.

Thats all for now. Until next time!
