To Be A Product Manager | Day 16

This journal helps me improve 1% every day…

Welcome to Day 16 of

To Be A Product Manager

It』s 7:33PM in the evening, and I』m standing in front of my desk and writing this daily journal. As I said, today should be the highlight of the week, because I』m going to show other colleagues my new design of sharing and recommendation feature. I arrived at office before 9 as usual, even we don』t have a specific time for being late for work.

I don』t have any expectations for this meeting and my presentation. My goal is to share my work and learn from other people』s opinions, as well as the way they provide suggestions and feedback.

I heard a lot of people saying,

Stop thinking about you are gonna surprise others while on the stage, once you』re at that point, you are back to your default settings. You』re showing the world who you really are.

I know I』m not going to surprise other colleagues, they』ve seen too many great ideas and neat logics and interactions. I』m just going to get feedback and practice my THICK SKIN, and survive from this meeting.

Goals

  • Finish feature list v0.1
  • Learn from meeting
  • Self reflection

Challenges

I』m very proud to tell you guys

I screwed up my presentation, lol!

Not really screwed up, but close. ?? Here』s why:

  1. I presented in English, and today I realized my English drops too much after getting back to China. Or maybe it』s just the terms and phrases we use in product design and management. But I should build up my language skill, since we have some Americans on board.
  2. The whole flow and logic of my presentation is still not clear. I made many changes to the previous one I shared with my product director. But this version, we don』t have time to look through those changes before the meeting. Being a product manager requires a huge critical and logical mind, and I still have a long way to go.
  3. I』m not familiar with Axure and OmniGraffle this type of wireframe tools. So my mockups are finished in Photoshop and Sketch. I added some simple graphic effect like shadows, colors and different typography. Being a product manager, you should save time on these type of things and focus more on the flow and logic of the product itself. Leave all these to UX designer and visual designer.

These are 3 lessons learned from today』s work. It might sound silly and naive for you, but I』m damn sure after 1,000 daily journals, you will see a really good product manager. If not, I will still be able to see this process of learning and what I gain every single day.

My name is Zake Zhang, a rookie VR product manager based in Shenzhen, China. I』m thinking what if I write daily product journal for 1000 days?

Thanks for reading! I really appreciate your time!

Warm Regards,

Zake

be so good they can』t ignore you.
