Are professors intimidated by intelligent students? Why or why not?

教授會被非常聰明的學生威脅到嗎?為什麼?

回答

I once attended a presentation from a graduate student who showed some very nice work regarding a very focused aspect of insect behaviour. He made a compelling case, showed a lot of interesting experimental data and analysis, and his conclusions were sound.

The problem was that also in the audience, was a very old, famous, retired scientist who had built a career on saying the exact opposite. If the student was correct, it meant that the old mans perspective on this issue had been wrong his whole life.

When the student finished, the old man silently and calmly got to his feet and walked up to the front of the room. The tension in the room was very thick. When the professor reached the student, he shook his hand, thanked him, hugged him and then burst into tears.

And thats how science is supposed to work.
