To Be A Product Manager | Day 8
Welcome to Day 8 of
To Be A Product Manager
Today is sunny in Shenzhen, but our new office is still colder than the outside. Our product director is back from Japan, and finally we can discuss some details about product planning and our next sprint.
I read Mark Thomas』s Product Management in 100 words,
Prioritize. Have strong opinions, weakly held. Plug the gaps. Launch and iterate. Know the user. People > products. Create team culture. Always overcommunicate. Work with people whose strengths and weaknesses complement your own. Take good notes. Your calendar is sacred. There is no such thing as an easy launch; launching good enough > never launching. Have fun, detatch, do not burn out. Always have a 20% project. Follow passions and connect the dots later. Always have a cofounder. Begging forgiveness > asking permission. Embrace the struggle. Take big risks; your failures won』t matter in two years and your successes could change the world.
This is my first time hearing the concept
Strong opinions, weakly held
which means allowing your intuition to guide you to a conclusion as 「strong opinion」 part, doubting yourself and idea in a creative way as 「weakly held」 respectively. But eventually an new idea or hypothesis will emerge.
Goals
- Prepare for the product planning meeting
- Feedback and ideas about MVP
Challenges
I reread Mike Alger』s research on VR UX design, and I share this with our UX designer and engineer. We talked a lot about this user interface in VR, how to improve it, and could we build up a new way of communicating in virtual reality.
For the first time, I feel all the efforts I put in learning Unity, C# and how to build my own VR app help a ton. When I』m familiar with the process of developing VR project in Unity, it just makes it so much easier to communicate with engineers. You will never say something stupid and ask for something impossible.
However, my knowledge only covers Unity and some CSS and HTML. It would be awesome if I had experience in developing Android and iOS app. So the lesson learned is that
the first step for people who want to be a product manager is to develop an app, be passionate about UX/UI design and have a mindset always asking WHY.
Tomorrow I will meet our senior product manager who interviewed me for this position. And along with product director and UX designer, we are going to have the last product planning meeting before Chinese New Year. Our tech team in the states will keep working on that when we are having holidays.
Wish you enjoy the time with your family and loved ones.
Happy Chinese New Year!
Zake
be so good they can』t ignore you.
