The Brain: The Story of You 2016/04

by David Eagleman

The Idiot Brain: A Neuroscientist Explains What Your Head is Really Up To (2016/02)

by Dean Burnett

Why do you lose arguments with people who know MUCH LESS than you? Why can you recognise that woman, from that thing . . . but cant remember her name? And why, after your last break-up, did you find yourself in the foetal position on the sofa for days, moving only to wipe the snot and tears haphazardly from your face?

Heres why: the idiot brain. For something supposedly so brilliant and evolutionarily advanced, the human brain is pretty messy, fallible and disorganised. For example, your memory is egotistical. No, really. Conspiracy theories and superstitions are the inevitable effects of a healthy brain. And alcohol can actually improve your memory.**

In The Idiot Brain, neuroscientist Dean Burnett tours our mysterious and mischievous grey (and white) matter. Along the way he explains the human brains imperfections in all their glory and how these influence everything we say, do and experience. Expertly researched and entertainingly written, this book is for anyone who has wondered why their brain appears to be sabotaging their life, and what on earth it is really up to.

Reaching Down the Rabbit Hole 2016/1

by Allan Ropper (Author), Brian David Burrell (Author)

"What is it like to try to heal the body when the mind is under attack? In this gripping and illuminating book, Dr Allan Ropper reveals the extraordinary stories behind some of the life-altering afflictions that he and his staff are confronted with at the Neurology Unit of Harvards Brigham and Womens Hospital. Neurologists diagnose and treat serious illnesses of the brain by combining the hard science of medical knowledge with the art of intuitive reasoning. The unique challenge they face is that their primary sources of information - the patients brains - are quite often altered, sometimes bizarrely, as a result of disease. Like Alice in Wonderland, Dr Ropper inhabits a place where absurdities abound: a sportsman who starts spouting gibberish; an undergraduate who suddenly becomes psychotic; a salesman who drives around and around a roundabout, unable to get off; a mother who has to decide whether a life locked inside her own head is worth living. How does one begin to treat such cases, to counsel people whose lives may be changed forever? How does one train the next generation of clinicians to deal with the moral and medical aspects of brain disease? Dr Ropper answers these questions by taking the reader into a world where lives and minds hang in the balance."

The Future of the Brain: Essays by the World』s Leading Neuroscientists 2016/11

by Gary Marcus (Editor), Jeremy Freeman (Editor)

ABOUT THE SERIES: The Very Short Introductions series from Oxford University Press contains hundreds of titles in almost every subject area. These pocket-sized books are the perfect way to get ahead in a new subject quickly. Our expert authors combine facts, analysis, perspective, new ideas, and enthusiasm to make interesting and challenging topics highly readable.

The Brain: A Very Short Introduction (Very Short Introductions) 2005/12

by Michael OShea (Author)

In this fascinating book, Michael OShea provides a non-technical introduction to the main issues and findings in current brain research, and gives a sense of how neuroscience addresses questions about the relationship between the brain and the mind. Chapters tackle subjects such as brain processes, perception, memory, motor control and the causes of altered mental states. A final section discusses possible future developments in neuroscience, touching on artificial intelligence, gene therapy, the importance of the Human Genome Project, drugs by design, and transplants.

Consciousness: A Very Short Introduction (Very Short Introductions) 2005/3

Memory: A Very Short Introduction (Very Short Introductions) 2008/11

30-Second Brain: The 50 most mind-blowing ideas in neuroscience, each explained in half a minute 2014/3

by Anil Seth (Editor)

Are we all at the mercy of our brain chemistry? Do you think that the amygdala and the hippocampus are fantastical sea monsters? What can an MRI scan tell us? Could you explain to dinner-party guests why we don』t giggle when we tickle ourselves? 30-Second Brain is here to fill your mind with the science of exactly what』s happening inside your head. Using no more than two pages, 300 words and an illustration, this is the quickest way to understand the wiring and function of the most complex and intricate mechanism in the human body. Discover how the networks of 90 billion nerve cells work together to produce perception, action, cognition and emotion. Explore how your brain defines your personality, and what it gets up to while you are asleep. Illustrated with mind-bending graphics and supported by biographies of pioneers in the field of neuroscience, it』s the book to get your grey matter thinking about your grey matter.

We Are Our Brains: From the Womb to Alzheimers 2015/01

by Dick Swaab (Author)

This is Your Brain on Music: Understanding a Human Obsession 2008/5

by Daniel J. Levitin (Author)

This is the first book to offer a comprehensive explanation of how humans experience music and to unravel the mystery of our perennial love affair with it. Using musical examples from Bach to the Beatles, Levitin reveals the role of music in human evolution, shows how our musical preferences begin to form even before we are born and explains why music can offer such an emotional experience. Music is an obsession at the heart of human nature, even more fundamental to our species than language. In This Is Your Brain On Music Levitin offers nothing less than a new way to understand it, and its role in human life.

You Are the Music: How Music Reveals What it Means to be Human 2014/3

by Victoria Williamson (Author)

這兩本可以搭配Oliver Sachs的《Musicophilia: Tales of Music and the Brain》。

Music, Mind and Education 1988/3

by Keith Swanwick (Author), Prof Keith Swanwick (Author)

Neurogastronomy 2011/11

by Gordon Shepherd

Neuroenology: How the Brain Creates the Taste of Wine 2016/12

by Gordon Shepherd

Picassos Brain: The basis of creative genius 2016/8

by Christine Temple

Where does creativity come from? Why are some people more creative than others? Eminent neuropsychologist Christine Temple navigates a wide range of factors from the hard science (visual memory, spatial ability, brain functions) to the environmental (the 『mad genius』 myth, and Gladwell』s 10,000 hours of practice). In each case she discusses how a particular theory weighs up in the case of Picasso and uses him to show how these factors can combine into true creative genius. In this book, she proposes 7 key causes of creativity to spell out the acronym: PICASSO (Playful mindset, Inhibition reduced, Curiosity, Attentional focus, Single-mindedness, Stoicism, Obsession). This is the first book to look at a multitude of traits in creativity, and nail down the key factors that matter (and also which ones don』t) to provide an overall picture of the fascinating area, linking the science to the personal.

The Fragile Brain: The strange, hopeful science of dementia 2016/11

by Kathleen Taylor (Author)

The Tell-Tale Brain: Unlocking the Mystery of Human Nature 2012/4

by V. S. Ramachandran (Author)

Blame My Brain: the Amazing Teenage Brain Revealed 2013/05

by Nicola Morgan (Author)

Do Zombies Dream of Undead Sheep?: A Neuroscientific View of the Zombie Brain 2016/9

by Timothy Verstynen (Author), Bradley Voytek (Author)

Neurocomic 2013/10

by Matteo Farinella (Author, Illustrator)

Brain On Fire: My Month of Madness 2013/9

by Susannah Cahalan (Author)

Susannah Cahalan was a happy, clever, healthy twenty-four-year old. Then one day she woke up in hospital, with no memory of what had happened or how she had got there. Within weeks, she would be transformed into someone unrecognizable, descending into a state of acute psychosis, undergoing rages and convulsions, hallucinating that her father had murdered his wife; that she could control time with her mind. Everything she had taken for granted about her life, and who she was, was wiped out.

This is Susannahs story of her terrifying descent into madness and the desperate hunt for a diagnosis, as, after dozens of tests and scans, baffled doctors concluded she should be confined in a psychiatric ward. It is also the story of how one brilliant man, Syria-born Dr Najar, finally proved - using a simple pen and paper - that Susannahs psychotic behaviour was caused by a rare autoimmune disease attacking her brain. His diagnosis of this little-known condition, thought to have been the real cause of devil-possessions through history, saved her life, and possibly the lives of many others. Cahalan takes readers inside this newly-discovered disease through the progress of her own harrowing journey, piecing it together using memories, journals, hospital videos and records. Written with passionate honesty and intelligence, Brain on Fire is a searingly personal yet universal book, which asks what happens when your identity is suddenly destroyed, and how you get it back.

The New Me: My Journey Back From Traumatic Brain Injury 2015/10

by Hugh Smith (Author)

The Tale of the Duelling Neurosurgeons 2015/3

The History of the Human Brain as Revealed by True Stories of Trauma, Madness, and Recovery

by Sam Kean (Author)

For centuries, scientists had only one way to study the brain: wait for misfortune to strike - strokes, seizures, infections, lobotomies, horrendous accidents, phantom limbs, Siamese twins - and see how the victims changed afterwards. In many cases their survival was miraculous, and observers marvelled at the transformations that took place when different parts of the brain were destroyed. Parents suddenly couldnt recognise their children. Pillars of the community became pathological liars and paedophiles. Some people couldnt speak but could still sing. Others couldnt read but could write.

The stories of these people laid the foundations of modern neuroscience and, century by century, key cases taught scientists what every last region of the brain did. With lucid explanations and incisive wit, Sam Kean explores the brains secret passageways and recounts the forgotten tales of the ordinary individuals whose struggles, resilience and deep humanity made neuroscience possible.

Do No Harm: Stories of Life, Death and Brain Surgery 2014/10

by Henry Marsh (Author)

Human Evolution: Our Brains and Behavior 2016/11

Adventures in Human Being 2016/2

by Gavin Francis (Author)

DK: The Psychology Book 2012/2

by Nigel Benson (Author), Catherine Collin (Author), Joannah Ginsburg (Author), Voula Grand (Author), Merrin Lazyan (Author), Marcus Weeks (Author), Sarah Tomley (Editor)

The Human Brain Coloring Book 2000/5

by Marian C. Diamond (Author), Arnold B. Scheibel (Author)
