他將這張專輯取名為《The Best That I Could Do(我能做出的最棒的歌曲)》。

5 Career Development Tips From 20+ Years Of Advising Candidates

Over the years, I』ve learned a lot from working with

great companies, highly successful executives, and hardworking, capable

candidates as a talent industry professional and career advisor. I』ve also interacted with many companies and

people who were much less impressive and successful. Based on what I』ve seen, there are certain

pieces of advice that I』ve shared many times with others while providing

guidance for their job search, career development, and/or career decision-making. If I were to identify the Top 5, most solid

career development tips that I』ve highlighted most to others, especially to

those at an earlier career stage, it would be these.

1) Your career lasts a long

time – Successful businesses all consider the short-, mid-,

and long-term of their situation. It』s

the same for your career when making important job decisions. Too many candidates I meet, however, don』t seem

to recognize that every decision, every move they make today has a direct

impact on the situations they』ll be able to attract and capture tomorrow. While the short-term may seem like reality to

you today, the mid-term and long-term of your career will also become realities

as well. And they』ll be defined by the decisions

you make and situations you』re a part of today.

2) You don』t need to reinvent success – Here』s the thing about best practices, good habits, and success. You don』t have to reinvent, discover or

figure these things out. Examples

already exist. As such, I always tell

candidates that the most effective way to develop yourself faster is to copy/imitate/listen/observe/

interact with outstanding people as much as you can.

Many, however, get too caught up being unique and

independent, especially early in their career.

They want to do things their way, and don』t pay enough attention to what』s

going on around them. However, the

approaches to good communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills haven』t

changed much over time. So if you want to learn to do something well, then learn from others who

already do it well.

3) Think Platform, Not Just Job – You could be the most talented, motivated, hardest

hardworking person in the world with the most attractive job description there is. But if the platform you』re on has big limitations,

then these will also be your limitations for doing your job well and achieving your success.

Weak platforms with poor

resources and more restrictions will neutralize your potential and efforts. So beyond just the job scope, job title, and

salary, you need to consider the entire platform you join. This includes the industry, company

culture/DNA, leadership/management team, products/services, key success

factors/unique competitive advantages, etc.

Strong platforms also help you build a solid

foundation to capture better opportunities when you』re ready. For instance, when I decided to make a major

career change, I was able to get into a top MBA program. A big reason was because of the high quality

environment my first company provided me, where I worked with excellent people,

participated in successful situations, and learned good habits and approaches

to doing things.

If you』re like me, you may not figure out your career

direction until later on. If this is the

case for you too, it』s the quality of your platform and not just your job that

will help you make big changes and capture future opportunities.

4) Experience Now, Money Later – If making a lot of money important to you, then the key concept to

understand is, it』s not about how much

money you make today, but about how much you can make over your career.」 For example, those who make most money are

CEOs/ COOs/CFOs/etc., then VPs, heads, then directors, and so on. The big question is what』s your ability to

reach these levels in your career?

So

while a particular job may pay more now, will it really help you build the capabilities

and achievements you need to attract bigger, higher paying roles later on? Don』t sell out your potential and future for

a short-term gain. Making more money

happens by showing employers that you』re worth it. I』ve seen many candidates take a lower paying

opportunity that offered them much more responsibilities, exposure, and upsides. Ultimately, it provided them with better

career prospects and greater earning power in the mid- and long-term. Especially early on, choose high quality situations that will develop your experience

and capabilities. This is how you eventually go higher and get

there faster to make more money over your career.

4) Focus More On What Others Think – Here』s the reality with regards to success. You don』t hire yourself. You don』t promote

yourself, give yourself a raise, or assign yourself new opportunities. It』s

others who do these based on their view of how well you can respond to the main

objectives of the company, department, and team you』re in.

So

to better achieve your success, you need to get outside your own head. You need to understand how your boss, top

management, and clients view things. Because it』s your ability to support

the objectives and key success factors of others that determine how they assess

your value and the opportunities they want to offer you.

Many years ago, John Cougar Mellencamp

released an album of his greatest hits.

He titled it, The Best That I

Could Do
. Regarding the best career advice

I have to offer, you could say these five tips are the best that I can do. I hope they』re helpful, because they

represent 20+ years of my life and what I』ve learned!

How

about you? What are some of the best career

insights and pieces of career advice that you often share with others?
