Raymond Carver, Luck
I was nine years old.
I had been around liquorall my life. My friendsdrank too, but they could handle it.
Wed take cigarettes, beer,a couple of girlsand go out to the fort.Wed act silly.Sometimes youd pretendto pass out so the girlscould examine you. Theyd put their handsdown your pants whileyou lay there trying
not to laugh, or elsethey would lean back, close their eyes, andlet you feel them all over.Once at a party my dadcame to the back porchto take a leak.We could hear voices
over the record playersee people standing around
laughing and drinking. When my dad finishedhe zipped up, stared a whileat the starry sky -- it wasalways starry thenon summer nights --and went back inside. The girls had to go home.I slept all night in the fortwith my best friend. We kissed on the lipsand touched each other.I saw the stars fadetoward morning.I saw a woman sleepingon our lawn.I looked up her dress, then I had a beerand a cigarette.Friends, I though thiswas living.Indoors, someonehad put out a cigarettein a jar of mustard.I had a straight shotfrom the bottle, thena drink of warm collins mix, then another whisky. And though I went from roomto room, no one was home. What luck, I thought.Years later,I still wanted to give upfriends, love, starry skies, for a house where no onewas home, no one coming back, and all I could drink.
