The federal budget is out of control.

這裡的the讀的是[ei], 大家知道the後邊的單詞如果是母音音素打頭, 則the需要讀作[ei], 但其實如果想要表示強調, 即使後邊不是母音音素打頭, 也可以把the讀作[ei]. 因為[i]聽著更強.

有的童鞋會把the聽成了be, 如果拋開語境的話, 我完全無法單靠耳朵分辨到底是the還是be, 這裡就是一個很好的例子「聽力不能只靠耳朵」.

11 Twenty years ago, in 1960, our federal government payroll was less than 13 billion dollars.

12 Today it is 75 billion.

13 During these 20 years, our population has only increased by 23.3%.
