海盜英文用語大科普|你崇拜海盜，只不過是藏在骨子裡的匪氣使然

那些強取勝過苦耕的慾望，

還有對桀驁不馴的傑克船長的崇拜，

讓世人渴望這種自由冒險、放縱恣意、

來去如風的逍遙生活。

大魚大肉配朗姆酒，

沒有世俗人情法理的羈絆，

閑了就打家劫舍、與人火拚，

縱橫四海、尋找寶藏，

當然，也只是想想。

今天，一十來扯pirate lingo！

遙想1680 – 1730的海盜黃金時代，

那時候他們是rogue一般的存在，

創造了一堆pirate words。

比如第一人稱叫me，第二人稱叫ye，

小夥伴叫mateys, 小表砸為scurvy dogs.

雷猴是 Ahoy! 啊呀媽呀叫Avast!，

還有一些經典的nautical insults，

不僅僅用於懟敵人，還用於哥們閨密之間互損。

你可以直呼半路殺你個程咬金的人為a bilge rat.

你還可以直呼一些水手菜鳥或小白為 landlubber.

如果你和你好基友的友誼的小船翻了，

你可以用scurvy buccaneers懟TA。

海盜還愛用arr這個詞，

可指同意贊成，也可以用於疼痛時的呻吟聲，

還可以用於其它喜怒哀樂的高潮情緒下發出的感嘆。

裝海盜的x格，還要避免使用當代流行俚語，

要把modern slang翻譯成pirate speak.

比如， stinks like trash, 說成

"Arr, ye smell

like yeve been bathing in bilge for weeks!"

你你你，你就是傑克船長！！！

我們先來擼一串常用jargon，

再來總結海盜用語的一些規律。

入門級海盜用語| The Pirate Primer

Ahoy: Hey!

The pirates version of Aloha, the interjection often means "Hello!" or

"Hi!" but can sometimes be used for 「Goodbye."

Arr! 啊！

An exclamation.

Avast: Stop!

From the Dutch term for hold fast and means "Stop and pay attention."

Aye: Yes

Batten down the hatches

A signal to prepare the ship for an upcoming storm

Bilge rat

(1) A rat living in the bilge of a ship. It is considered the lowliest creature by pirates, but many pirates take to eating the animals to survive.

(2) An insulting name given by a pirate.

black spot: Death threat

A black smudge on

a piece of paper used by pirates as a threat. A black spot is often accompanied

by a written message specifying the threat. Most often a black spot represents

a death threat.

Black Jack

Large

drinking cups made of leather made stiffer with an application of tar.

Blimey!

An exclamation of

surprise.

Blunt

Slang for money

or coins.

Boatswain(商船的)水手長；(軍艦的)掌帆長；(掌帆纜的)准尉

Often

pronounced Bosun, this crew member was in charge of the deck, whether it be the

crew, equipment, or activity on the deck.

booty

Treasure.

bounty

Reward or payment, usually from a government, for the capture of a criminal, specifically a pirate.

brass monkey

a brass tray for holding cannon balls. The expression 「cold enough to freeze the balls off." A brass monkey" came from the fact that, in extreme cold conditions, the

brass monkeys would contract, expelling the cannon balls they were holding

Bucko

A familiar term meaning friend.

Bunny Grub

Vegetables

Buccaneer掠奪者；西印度海盜

A pirate, especially one of the freebooters who preyed on Spanish shipping in the West

Indies during the 17th century. The buccaneers were first hunters of pigs and

cattle on the islands of Hispanola and Tortuga, but were driven off by the

Spanish and turned to piracy. Buccaneers were said to be heavy drinking, cruel

pirates.

Cackle Fruit

Cat o nine tails

A whip with nine

lashes used for flogging. "A taste of the cat" might refer to a full

flogging, or just a single blow to」 smarten up" a recalcitrant hand

Corsair

1) A pirate,

especially along the Barbary Coast; a romantic term for pirate. This term was

used for Christian and Muslim privateers in the Mediterranean between the 16th

and 19th centuries. The Barbary corsairs centered on North African states and

were often 「hired" by Muslim nations to attack Christian ships. The

Christian Corsairs were known as the Maltese corsairs and they took their

orders from the Knights of St. John to attack the Turks.回教徒海盜

(2) A pirate ship, often operating with official sanction.私掠船

(3) In POTCO, an EITC War Sloop.

The name often

inaccurately given to the platforms upon the masts above the yards. These are

properly called tops or fighting tops. The term crows nest was only

applied to those platforms on whaling ships where the crew would line the

platforms with blankets, straw, etc., in order to stay warm during long cold

watches in the cold climates where the whales were found

Cutlass

A short, heavy

sword with a curved blade. A common weapon for pirates and sailors because,

being curved and usually shorter in length, they were easier to wield in

crowded melées on a ships deck.

Davy Jones』 Locker

The bottom o the

sea that holds dead sailors and pirates...a reference to death.

A fictional place at the bottom of the ocean. In short, a term meaning death. Davy Jones was said to be an evil spirit lurking at sea, waiting to escort dead sailors or pirates

to his place or locker at the bottom of the waters. Davy Jones was said to sink

every ship he ever over took, and thus, the watery grave that awaited all who

were sunk by him was given his name. To die at sea is to go to Davy Jones

Locker.

To be in Davys Grip: To be close to death, or frightened.

To have the Davies or the Joneseys: To be frightened.

To see you to Davy Jones: To threaten to kill someone.

Dance the Hempen Jig

To hang someone.

(The hanging rope was often made of hemp fibers.)

Dead reckoning

A method of navigation that uses a chart or peg board and calculates course, speed and time to determine current location

Dogsbody

Biscuit soaked in sugar water

Doldrums

When the wind dies for a long period of time -sometimes weeks - leaving the ship adrift and

unable to sail. Doldrums are often encountered to either side of the equator

before you reach the tropics (i.e. Tropic of Capricorn, Tropic of Cancer)

Dubloon

A gold coin minted by Spain. Worth about seven weeks pay to an average sailor.

Doubloons

Pieces of gold...

Doughboy

Simple dumplings made of flour and animal fat.

Fiddlers Green

The private heaven where pirates be going when they die.

Filibustier

French word for pirate.

Freebooter

From the Dutch for free and plunder, reference to a pirate.

Furner

A ship which be your own, not one ye steal an plunder.

Gentlemen o fortune

A slightly more positive term for pirates!

Go on the account

To embark on a piratical cruise

A pleasant term used by pirates to describe the act of turning pirate. The basic idea was that a pirate was more "freelance" and thus was, more or less, going into

business for himself.

Grog：A pirates favorite drink.

The nickname of an alcoholic liquor, made from watered down rum and latterly sour fruit juice. It was to ward off scurvy, and minimize the amount of alcohol a man would

imbibe. Admiral Vernon is said to have been the first to dilute the rum of

sailors.

Grog blossom

A redness on the nose or face of persons who drink ardent spirits to excess.

Head

A marine toilet, which could be no more than a hole cut in the decking at the head or bow of the ship that would allow waste to go into the sea, the waves hopefully washing

away what may have not hit the water (also called a jar din).

Hands

A term for crew members, as in "all hands on deck"

Hardtack (also sea biscuit)

A hard biscuit or bread made from flour and water baked into a moisture-free rock to prevent spoilage; a pirate ships staple. Hardtack has to be broken into small pieces or

soaked in water before eaten.

Heave ho

Instruction to

put some strength into whatever one is doing.

Hogshead(容量約63-140美製加侖的)大酒桶

A large barrel or cask holding 63 to 140 gallons, usually referring to alcohol.

Hornswaggle

To cheat or defraud, often of money or belongings, Yosemite Sam knows a lot about it.

Jack

A flag or a sailor

Jack Tar

Common name for sailors of the Royal Navy.

Jacobs Ladder

Rope ladder that was used to climb aboard ships.

Jolly Roger骷髏旗（飾有白色骷髏和交叉股骨的黑旗）

Believed to be from the French words for pretty red, the Jolly Roger is the pirates fabric

calling card, often including a skull and crossbones. The Jolly Roger flag

announces to your target that you are pirates, and that surrender is a good

idea.

Keelhaul（把水手）拖曳過船底（作為懲罰）

A truly vicious punishment where a scurvy dog be tied to a rope and dragged along the

barnacle-encrusted bottom of a ship. They note surviving this.

Kiss the gunners daughter

A punishment

consisting of being hoisted over one of the ships guns and flogged.

Landlubber

"Land-lover," someone not used to life onboard a ship. Lubber was also an old English word for a big, slow, clumsy person, and this term was aimed at those on board who were not very skilled or at ease with ship life, as if to say, "You were no better on the land."

Loaded to the Gunwales (pron. gunnels): drunk

Long nines

Large ship guns that fired nine pound shot at much farther range.

Matey: A shipmate or a friend.

A piratical way to address someone in a cheerful, if not necessarily friendly, fashion.

Man-of-War / Man

O War 戰艦

The name used for a pirate ship that is designed and outfitted for battle.

Me hearty: a friend or shipmate.

Me: My.

Monkey

Small cannon

Monkey jacket(水手穿的)緊身短上衣

Short jacket worn by some of those aboard the ship/midshipmen.

No prey, no pay

A common pirate law meaning a crew received no wages, but rather shared whatever loot was

taken.

Give no quarter

An instruction that an enemy crew is to be shown no mercy. There are to be no survivors.

Quarter is derived from the idea of 「shelter", quarter is given when mercy is offered

by pirates. To give no quarter is to indicate that none will be spared. Quarter

is often the prize given to an honorable loser in a pirate fight. If enraged, however, a pirate would deprive the loser any such luxury.

Old salt

A sailor that has a great deal of experience on the seas

Pieces oeight

Pieces o silver which can be cut into eights to be given small change.

Pressgang水兵強募隊

A company of men commissioned to force men into service such as on a vessel, specifically a pirate ship.

Privateer武裝民船

A pirate officially sanctioned by a national power

Powder Monkey

A gunners assistant.

Poop deck

Deck that is the

highest and farthest back

Rope』s end

Another term for flogging. i.e.: "Yell meet the ropes end for that, me bucko!"

Salmagundi

A salad usually consisting of chopped meat, anchovies, eggs, and onions, often arranged in rows on lettuce and served with vinegar and oil.

Seadog

An old sailor or pirate

Sea Legs

在顛簸的船上行走自如的本領；不暈船的本領

The ability to adjust ones balance to the motion of a ship, especially in rough seas. After walking on a ship for long periods of time, sailors became accustomed to the

rocking of the ship in the water. Early in a voyage a sailor was said to be

lacking his "sea legs" when the ship motion was still foreign to him.

After a cruise, a sailor would often have trouble regaining his "land

legs" and would swagger on land.

Scallywag: A bad person. A scoundrel.

Scurvy dog! a fine insult!

Shiver me timbers!

Akin to "Blow me down!", an exclamation of shock or disbelief, believed to

come from the sound the ship made when 『shocked by running aground or hit by a

cannon blast.

Sink me!

An expression of surprise -- as in: "Your friend hasnt made a Pirate yet? Youve got to be

sinking me!"

Son of a Biscuit Eater

A derogatory term indicating a bastard son of a sailor

Sprogs: raw, untrained recruits

Squadron: a group of ten or less warships

Sweet trade: the career of piracy

Thar: The opposite of "here."

Thar she blows!

An expression used when a whale is spotted from the ship

Three sheets to the wind

Someone who is quite drunk

Tooth Rot: Sugar

Walk the plank被海盜強迫從跳板上墜海

A punishment which entails someone who walks over the side of the ship off of the plank.

Their hands are often tied so that they cannot swim and they drowned.

Wench

A young woman or peasant girl, sometimes a serving girl or even prostitute.

Weather gauge (to have the~)

To have the weather gauge means to have a positional advantage on another ship in combat, where the wind is blowing the right direction for your ship to quickly close

and engage the other ship, but blowing in the wrong direction for the other

ship to do the same

Ye: you

Yellow Jack黃熱病；檢疫旗

A yellow flag flown to indicate the presence of an illness, often yellow fever, aboard a

ship. Often the flag is used to trick pirates into avoiding potential targets.

Yo-ho-ho: Pirate laughter

There is often used to express some sort of cheer but also can be used to call attention to

the speaker.

蟹蟹你們每次都能感人地堅持看到這~

燃鵝，還沒完，

說好的要總結的規律呢？！

熱騰騰的接好了啊：

1. Double up on all your adjectives and youll be bountifully bombastic with

your phrasing.

加重語氣、誇張化。

比如，把a big ship"說成a great,

grand ship!" ，不說never, 而說 "No nay neer!"

2. Never speak in anything but the present tense.

比如，不說I am",而說I be".不說You are",而說 "You be". 不說They are",而說,

"They be".

3. Slur your words.

Pirates did not articulate their words so much as

mumble incoherently ( speak like theyre all inebriated）

儘可能地學會mutter，儘可能地模糊其詞。

請自行腦補德普大叔扮演Captain Jack Sparrow時的口吻。

小竅門：Drop your gs and vs in words.

比如不說never ever,"而說neer eer."不說laughing"，"swimming" 而說laughin"，"swimmin"

4. Growl at your mates.

Pirates are not known for their sunny, vibrant attitudes.

學會grumble和scowl的習慣。嫌棄的時候，就翻起你的逆天白眼來（roll your

eyes）。

笑得時候，別再giggle，譏笑怎麼嘲諷怎麼來。

5. Add a bit of

rasp to your voice. Pirates talk in deep, gravelly voices.

If you have a naturally high-pitched

voice, practice talking lower. Shout often to strain your vocal cords so you

can achieve a scratchier voice. You can also gargle lemon juice to add more

roughness to your voice.

試著在開頭用承重的低喉音炮說一句 "Arr, me hearty," 會容易些,

還有，記得保護好自己的聲帶。

6. Embellish your words with enthusiasm.

Pirates are not timid folk. When theyre

amused, they guffaw. When theyre outraged, they roar. Don』t hold your emotions

back. Talk loudly and exaggerate your words to indicate passionate emotions.

情緒飽滿激烈不含蓄。

比如，別再說, "Im surprised,"，盡情吼出Me eyes must be foolin me! Are ye

seein this, ya mangy bilge rat?!"

7. Talk with your hands.

Pirates gesture wildly with their

hands to drive their points home. Dont worry about whether you』re waving your

hands too wildly: the more flamboyantly you do it, the better. If youre angry

or surprised, slam your hand down on a table or hard surface. Pat your mateys

on the back and laugh heartily if they tell an amusing joke.

8. Exude confidence in your words and actions.

Pirates generally dont struggle with

insecurity: rather, they practically radiate confidence. Dont be afraid to

voice your opinion, even if you think others will disagree with it. Should

anyone shout back at you, throw them in the brig and tell them theyll walk the

plank next time they give you lip.

If youre prone to "uhms"

or your voice often shakes, dont be afraid to pause. Pausing gives you a

moment to recollect your thoughts and gain extra confidence.

一言一行滿滿的都是自信的光芒。

最後，

啥時候要是到了索馬利亞，

這些話詞能救命。

多學點語氣詞和高頻詞，沒錯的。

但若因藏在骨子裡的匪氣使然，

你非要get into character的話，

那就路漫漫了。

「我就是要成為海賊王一樣的人！」，

但現實終究會讓你血管里沸騰的荷爾蒙，

瞬間降到冰點。
