Some people think that all university students should study whatever they like. Others believe that they should only be allowed to study subjects that will be useful in the future, such as those related to science and technology. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

文/Scottie

When it comes to the college education, some deem that students should follow a curriculum according to their interest, and the others reckon that they are supposed to major in what will benefit their careers. I personally believe that college students should study both specialized courses and elective courses.

Offering students the opportunity to select whatever they like is conducive to their further development. Universities, the spiritual home of liberty, inspiration and self-improvement, are placed great expectation on fostering young generation to find the right life paths and fulfill their potential. It is an effective method to complete the value of universities by means of providing diverse courses and remove all obstacles to them. Additionally, students who have unrestrained access to various subjects are able to acquire extensive knowledge and express interest in different fields, resulting in a wide circle of friends.

If the university makes students married to useful subjects, they are likely to acquire a specialist working knowledge for future careers. As many employers complain that college graduates have a nodding acquaintance with required professional expertise because they distracted attention from study at college, so college administration should enforce a tight rule and guarantee students to concentrate on their majors. What is more, abundant useful skills are a tribute to personal potential, and will help graduates to stand out from the competitors. In fact, some students choose less complicated courses under the banner of developing interest, and their true intention is to obtain credit easily and get good grades.

In my view, students should study both tough major lessons and interesting ones, and allocate more time on useful subjects. On the one hand, it generally costs more time and energy to get the hang of the useful compulsory courses because of the high difficulty. On the other hand, taking interesting courses at leisure can help to alleviate the burden on students.

Some people think that all university students should study whatever they like. Others believe that they should only be allowed to study subjects that will be useful in the future, such as those related to science and technology. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

1)一些學生對這些課程並不感興趣,強制讓他們選擇這些課程可能會讓他們產生厭學情緒,導致學習效率低下;

2)市場需求變化很快,一些在今天看起來「有用」的專業明天可能就過時了,學校的課程設置往往難以跟上市場和技術的變化;

University-goers often have a hard time making their subject choices. While some suggest that students should have the freedom to study what they like, others argue that it is better to restrict them to science and technology studies. In my view, students should be allowed to pursue their unique and potentially diverse academic interests for the sake of their future development.

Giving young people the latitude to choose their degree courses, some argue, can improve their academic performance and advance their future careers. If students are able to choose majors that align with their interests, they will be more passionate about what they are taught in the lecture hall and will devote more time and energies to their studies. This enables them to achieve good grades and develop an area of specialization within their major that can better prepare them for employment.

The counter-argument, however, is that students should be restricted to subjects deemed useful by the job market. Today employers often place a premium on graduates in science majors, such as Computer Science, Software Engineering and Communications Technology, and young people enrolling in these courses can find it easier to land a good job and succeed in their careers. By contrast, those who follow their passion without considering job market characteristics may put themselves at a disadvantage when it comes to job-hunting. Therefore, universities should limit their students to subjects related to science and technology.

My view is that it is in students』 best interests to choose subjects in which they are interested. This can not only improve their academic performance but also enhance their employment prospects. Narrowing students』 choices would in effect do more harm than good as it could lead to an oversupply of graduates in certain fields, weakening their job competitiveness. It is therefore wiser to allow university students to make decisions on their own.
