Starting College in America

Labor Day weekend marks the start of the fall semester for many colleges in the US. Its overwhelming, confusing and exciting!

The first three weeks are usually pivotal in forming your first impressions of the campus, finding your group of friends and getting ahead in your academic career. These things are time-sensitive because everyone is just more flexible at the beginning of the semester.

But theres so much to take in and, naturally, so many questions. For example,

  1. How do I become friends with my roommates?

  2. Which classes should I take?

  3. How do I meet new people?
  4. What do I do if I dont understand the professor?
  5. How do I find an internship?

  6. Where are the parties?

So how do you navigate the pitfalls of all-nighters in the library and all-nighters in the party dorm? Balance and Focus.

You want to study well, have fun and sleep — and no, its not impossible to have all 3 — but it requires understanding the American college system and its shortcuts. It also requires long-term planning, because if you fall into the common habit of hanging out every day and then cramming for the exams, youll miss a lot of easy opportunities.
