[Scene: Central Perk, everyone but Phoebe is there.]

Phoebe:n(entering) Hi guys!

All: Hey,nPheebs! Hi!

Ross: Hey.nOh, oh, howd it go如何?

Phoebe: Um,nnot so good. He walked me to thensubway他送我到地鐵 and said We should do this again!

All: Ohh.nOuch.

Rachel:nWhat? He said we should do it again, thats good, right?

Monica: Uh,nno. Loosely translated We should do this again means You will never see mennaked.

loosely adv.

Rachel:nSince when?

Joey: Since always(=forever).nIts like dating language. Yknow, like Its not you means It is you.

Chandler:nOr Youre such a nice guy means Im gonna be dating leather-wearingnalcoholics and complaining about them to you.

Phoebe: Or,nor, yknow, um, I think we shouldnsee other people我們該試試別人 means Ha, ha, I already am.

Rachel: Andneverybody knows this?

Joey: Yeah.nCushions the blow.

cushion n.

Cushions the blow: 可憐的Rach問是不是只有她是顆嫩草,善解人意的Joey來了這麼一句,意思是take it easy.

Chandler:nYeah, its like when youre a kid, and your parents putnyour dog to sleep對狗實施安樂死, and theyntell you it went off to live on some farm.

go off v.

Ross:nThats funny, that, no, because, uh, our parents actually did, uh, send our dognoff to live on a farm.

Phoebe: Um, not so good. Henwalked me to the subway and said We should do this again! 「We should do this again」,表面上好像是以後我們還應該再繼續約會,其實這是dating language,往往都是反著說的。 比如「Its not you」就是「It is you」,「Youre such a nice guy」意思是 「Im gonna bendating leather-wearing alcoholics and complaining about them to you」等等。

Monica: No.nNot after what happened with Steve.

Chandler:nWhat are you talking about? We love Schhteve! Schhteve was schhexy!.. Sorry.

Schhteve wasnschhexy!」

Monica:nLook, I dont even know how I feel about him yet. Just give me a chance tonfigure that out.

figure outnv.

Rachel:nWell, then can we meet him?

Monica:nNope. Schhorry.

[Scene: Iridium, Monica and Paula are at work.]

Monica: Inmean, why should I let them meet him? I mean, I bring a guy home, and withinnfive minutes theyre all over him. I mean, theyre like- coyotes, picking off thenweak members of the herd.

coyote n.

all over adv.全部結束,n到處, 渾身, <口>完全象/all over him 這裡all over him的意思是a.不喜歡,全身挑毛病/在另一集中chan對mon說 pheo is all over him ,這裡有b. 我對你非常地著迷.= I have a crushnon you. Hey, look, the guy is dancing all over the girl. 這和nIm all over you 是完全不一樣的.

Paula:nListen. As someone whos seen morenthan her fair share of bad beef, Ill tell you: that is not such a terrible thing. I mean, theyre yournfriends, theyre just looking out after you關心你.

Asnsomeone whos seen more than her fair share of bad beef作為一個吃過的壞牛排比你看過的好牛排還多的人. Pick off the weak members of thenherd,摘取、挑選弱處下手的意思。

Monica: Inknow. I just wish that once, Id bring a guy home that they actually liked.

Paula:nWell, you do realise the odds可能性 of that happening are a little slimmer if theynnever get to meet the guy..

[Scene: Monica and Rachels, Chandler is smoking out on the balcony,nPhoebe is absent.]

Joey: Letnit go, Ross.

Ross: Yeah, nwell, you didnt know Chi Chi.

Monica: Donyou all promise?

All: Yeah!nWe promise! Well be good!

Monica:n(shouts to Chandler)nChandler? Donyou promise to be good?

(Chandlernmakes a Cross my heart sign. It starts to rain and he taps on thenwindow.)

Alan: Hi.

All: Hi,nAlan.

Alan: Ivenheard schho much about all you guyschh!

(Everyone laughs.)

[Time lapse, Alan is leaving.]

Monica: (tonAlan) Thanks. Ill call you tomorrow. (Alan exits, to all) Okay. Okay, letsnlet the Alan-bashing begin. Whos gonna take the first shot誰先來, hmm?

bash v.n. Alan

Monica: (to Alan) Thanks. Illncall you tomorrow. (Alan exits, to all) Okay. Okay, lets let the Alan-bashingnbegin. Whos gonna take the first shot, hmm? 「take the first shot」也值得記下,各種場合都可以用,「誰先來?」,呵呵,Antique的筆記那麼臭,開批判會啦,who』s gonna take the first shot?

(Silence.)

Monica:nCmon!

Ross:n...Ill go. Lets start with the way he kept picking at- no, Im sorry, I cantndo this, cant do this. We loved him.

pick at v.

All: Lovednhim! Yeah! Hes great!

Monica:nWait a minute! Were talking about someone that Im going out with?

All: Yeah!

Rachel: Andndid you notice...? (She spreads her thumb and indexnfinger

The Guys:n(reluctantly) Yeah.

Joey: Knownwhat was great? The way his smile was kinda crooked.

crook n.

Phoebe:nYes, yes! Like the man in the shoe!

Ross:n...What shoe?

Phoebe:nFrom the nursery rhyme. There was a crooked man, Who had a crooked smile, Whonlived in a shoe, For a... while...

nursery n.

There was a crooked man (There was a crooked man),他有一個扭曲的笑容,他生活在一隻鞋子里……」

(Dubious pause.)

dubious adj.

Ross: ...SonI think Alan will become thenyardstick against which all future boyfriends will be measured.

Is diploma the only yardstick ofnknowledge?

Rachel:nWhat future boyfriends? Nono, I th- I think this could be, yknow, it.

Monica:nReally!

Chandler:nOh, yeah. Id marry him just for his David Hasselhof impression alone. You knownIm gonna be doing that at parties, right? (Does the impression)

Ross: Younknow what I like most about him, though?

All: What?

Ross: The way he makes me feel about myself

All: Yeah...n

Commercial Break

[Scene: Central Perk, Monica is alone as Ross, Rachel, Chandler, and Joey enterndejectedly in softball gear.]

dejectedlynadv.

Monica:nHi.. how was the game?

Ross:nWell..

All: WEnWON!! Thank you! Yes!

Monica:nFantastic! I have one question: How is that possible?

Joey: Alan.n

Ross: Henwas unbelievable. He was like that-that-that Bugs Bunny cartoon where Bugs isnplaying all the positions, right, but instead of Bugs it was first base-Alan,nsecond base-Alan, third base-...

bugs adj.

Rachel: Inmean, it-it was like, it was like he made us into a team.

Ross: Yeah, nits his, uh, innate Alan-ness that-that-that we adore.

innate adj.

Chandler:nI personally could have a gallon of Alan.

[Scene: An street, Phoebe walks up to a homeless personn(Lizzie) she knows.]

homelessnadj.

Phoebe:nHey, Lizzie.

Lizzie:nHey, Weird Girl.

Lizzie: Didnyou pick out the vowels母音?

Phoebe:nYes. But I left in the Ys. Cause, yknow, "sometimes y". Uh, I also have something else for you.n(She searches in her purse.)

A, E, I, O, U, sometimes Y. n

Lizzie: Saltines

Phoebe: No,nbut would you like a thousand dollars and a football phone?

Lizzie:nWhat? (She opens the envelope Phoebe has given her.) Oh my God, theres reallynmoney in here.

Chandler:nWell, maybe its a contest, yknow? Like, collect all five?

Phoebe:nDoes, um, anyone wanna see?

All: Nooo!

(Chandlernlights a cigarette.)

All: Oh,nhey, dont do that! Cut it out停止做某事or 住手,住口!

Rachel:nIts worse than the thumb!

Chandler:nHey, this is so unfair!

Monica: Oh,nwhy is it unfair?

Chandler:nSo I have a flaw! Big deal! Like Joeys constant knuckle-cracking isntnannoying? And Ross, with his over-pronouncing everynsingle word將每個字發得過於清晰? And Monica, nwith that snort when she laughs? I mean, what the hell is that thing搞什麼? ...I accept all those flaws, why cant younaccept me for this?

Rachel:n"Indeed there isnt"... Inshould really get back to work.

Phoebe:nYeah, cause otherwise someone might get what they actually ordered.

Rachel: Ohh-ho-hooohhh. Thenhair comes out, and the gloves(n.手套)come on.

我估計是從拳擊那邊引過來的,as in boxing gloves/本來rachel是站在phoebe一條戰線上的(she thinks phoebes chewingnhair is endearing),沒想到pheobe「恩將仇報」的諷刺了她一回,Rachel覺得被出賣了,所以說phoebe has the gloves on.說有時候你還會聽到類似的說法:「notnlay a glove(fingure or hand) on」, which means leavenunhurt.

(They degenerate into bickering and Chandler happily starts to smoke, nundisturbed.)

degeneratenadj.退化的vt.退化degenerate into/退or蛻化為,墮落為/bickering n.

[Scene: Iridium n.[化]銥 to 飯店名稱, Monica and Paula are working.]

Monica: Didnyou ever go out with a guy your friends all really like?

Paula:nHoney.. you should always feel the thing. Listen, if thats how you feelnabout the guy, Monica, dump him!

Monica: Inknow.. its gonna be really hard.

Paula:nWell, hes a big boy, hell get over熬過去it.

Monica: No,nhell be fine. Its the other five Im worried about.

[Scene: Cental Perk, Joey and Ross are persecuting Chandler about hisnsmoking.]
