• graduate這個單詞折磨了我很久，容易記，更容易忘記。即便我知道「詞根grad: step,grade,步，級 後綴-ate: 表名詞，人或地位」，可依然忘，連grade一併記不住。美劇里經常出現grade，回憶自己學生階段幾年級的時候。可後面一次看見downgrade，蘋果手機ios系統降解的一個攻略，通過downgrade，再也不會忘記grade了，就再也不會忘記gradate了。

1、musical adj. 音樂的

musical student 有音樂天賦的人

music student 學音樂的人（the student who learned music）

2、damage v. 損壞

① n. 損害，損失，傷害

The storm has done a lot of damage to the village.

② vt. 損害，毀壞，損壞

The car was badly damaged in the accident.

3、It has belonged to our family for a long time.

belong是一個表示狀態的動詞，而不是行為動詞，所以不能用於進行時，常用的時態是一般現在時和現在過去時。

This farm belongs to me and it belonged to my father before me.

lesson 9 A cold welcome

1、crowd in the crowd 、

a crowd of people 一群人，沒有次序的人群, 擁擠的人群

a group of people 一群人，有次序的人群

a large crowd of people 一大群人

crowds of people 許多人, 人山人海

I spotted him in the crowd.

2、gather

It has taken me a lifetime to gather all these books.

3、What does "a cold welcome" refer to ? （refer to 指……）

4、strike the clock （人）敲鐘

clock strike 鍾自己響

Listen, the clock is striking.

strike twelve 數字表示敲擊的次數

5、Fifteen minutes passed and then, at five to twelve, the clock stopped.

… minutes pass … 幾點過幾分（前半小時，pass過了）

25 minutes passed eight

… minutes to … 幾點過幾分（後半小時，to還沒到）

a quarter to nine/15 minutes to nine

時刻指點時間, 時間指段時間。時刻前的介詞用at

…(some time) passed and then, sth. happened ……時間過去了，……

An hour passed and then, he arrived. 一個小時過去了，他終於來了。
