英國人最討厭美國人說的50個表達(上)(老文)

原文地址:Americanisms: 50 of your most noted examples - BBC News

去年寫的,改了一遍重發。

1. When people ask for something, I often hear: "Can I get a..." It infuriates me. It"s not NewYork. It"s not the 90s. You"re not in Central Perk with the rest of theFriends. Really."Steve, Rossendale, Lancashire

點單的時候,經常有人說「Can I geta…」,我一聽就惱火。你又不是在90年代紐約的中央公園拍《老友記》!

備註:不管咖啡館還是餐廳,哪怕是冰淇淋車,點單的時候說「I』ll havexxx, xxx and xxx, please.」,真的說「Can I…」,會讓服務生覺得你是暗示他們限制你的自由,故意不賣給你(在某米其林的真實經歷)。

2. The next time someone tells you something is the "least worst option", tell them thattheir most best option is learning grammar. Mike Ayres, Bodmin, Cornwall

再聽到有人說「最不壞的選擇」,告訴他們「最好選擇」好好說話。

備註少用雙重否定,即使用了(這種用法其實很不標準),多數情況下也是表示更加否定。聽到別人說「don』t tell younothing」,其實就是什麼都不告訴你。

3. The phrase I"ve watched seep into the language (especiallywith broadcasters) is "two-time" and"three-time".Have the words double, triple etc, been totally lost? Grammatically it makes nosense, and is even worse when spoken. My pulse rises every time I hear or seeit. Which is not healthy as it"s almost every day now. Argh! DRochelle, Bath

我經常聽到別人(尤其是播音員)不經意間說出「two-time」,「three-time」。雙倍(double)三倍(triple)什麼的都被你吃了嗎?這種用法根本不通,說出來更是奇怪,一聽這個我就氣得心砰砰跳。這說法危害我的健康,我差不多每天都能聽到。

備註Double Kill, Triple Kill, Quadro & Penta Kill (Pentagon).

4. Using 24/7 rather than"24 hours, 7 days a week" or even just plain "all day, everyday". Simon Ball, Worcester

說「24/7」而不是「每周七天每天24小時」,或者說「全天候不間斷」。

備註沒啥說的。。7 slash 24 多方便。

5. The one I can"t stand is "deplane", meaning to disembark an aircraft, used in the phrase"you will be able to deplane momentarily". TykeIntheHague,Den Haag, Holland

不懂為什麼要用「deplane」,意思是下飛機,經常聽見人說「您很快就可以deplane了」。

備註來跟我背單詞,embark/disembark。

6. To "wait on"instead of "wait for" when you"re not a waiter - once read a friend"scomment about being in a station waiting on a train. For him, the train had yetto arrive - I would have thought rather that it had got stuck at the stationwith the friend on board. T Balinski, Raglan, New Zealand

說「等著」而不是「等xx」,你又不是服務員。有次一個朋友在車站等火車,他跟我說「wait on a train」。他只是告訴我火車還沒到,我卻理解成他坐在火車上,在車站乾等著。

備註wait on相當於serve,給別人當服務員。(感謝@Roc Lee 糾正)

7. "It is what it is".Pity us.Michael Knapp, Chicago, US

「It is what it is」。饒了我吧。

備註艾佛森:I am what I am

斯坦恩:A rose is a rose is a rose.

8. Dare I even mention the fanny pack?Lisa, Red Deer, Canada

我能說fanny pack嗎?

備註英國人說的fanny是lady part。之前的stand-up還玩過這個梗,但是臨場緊張了說得太多沒玩好。

9. "Touch base" - itmakes me cringe no end. Chris, UK

「觸底」(其實就是聯繫的意思)。聽了都不住地打冷戰。

備註並不知道為什麼touch base會跟聯繫有聯繫。。

10. Is "physicality" areal word? Curtis, US

有「physicality」這個單詞嗎?

備註這個詞就是指人的身體(包括身體的狀況、機能等等等等),其實一個body就夠了。

11. Transportation. What"s wrong with transport?Greg Porter, Hercules, CA, US

Transportation。用transport不好嗎?

備註以前寫作文還用過transportation,後來發現一個transport真的足夠了,比如public transport。

12. The word I hate to hear is "leverage". Pronounced lev-er-ig rather than lee-ver -ig. It seemsto pop up in all aspects of work. And its meaning seems to have changed to"value added". Gareth Wilkins, Leicester

最近經常聽到「leverage」這個詞。好多人把第一個音節發成了「le」而不是「lee」。好像各行各業都用這個詞,而且意思還變成了「增加的價值」。

備註leverage是從lever(槓桿)變換過來的。這兩個詞都不按常理髮音。

13. Does nobody celebrate a birthday anymore, must we all "turn" 12 or 21 or 40? Even the Duke of Edinburgh wasuniversally described as "turning" 90 last month. When did thisbegin? I quite like the phrase in itself, but it seems to have obliterated allother ways of speaking about birthdays. Michael McAndrew, Swindon

現在都沒人過生日了嗎?大家都得「變(turn)」到多少歲嗎?就連愛丁堡公爵(女王的丈夫菲利普親王),大家都說他上個月「變」成90歲了。這詞是怎麼來的?雖然我挺喜歡,但是好像其他表示「過生日長一歲」的說法都被這個說法消滅了。

備註年紀小,就只聽過turn這一個說法。。

14. I caught myself saying "shopping cart" instead of shopping trolley todayand was thoroughly disgusted with myself. I"ve never lived nor been to the USeither. Graham Nicholson, Glasgow

我今天居然說了「shopping cart」而不是「shopping trolley」,我都覺得自己噁心。我去都沒去過美國。

備註好多網站的購物車貌似都是cart。《哈利波特》系列電影出現了好多trolley?記得《密室》里哈利撞在9 3/4站台牆上的時候跟站台管理人員說「Sorry, lost controlof the trolley」。還有《火焰杯》里哈利和秋張第一次見面時,那個賣東西的阿姨在說「Anything off thetrolley?」。(思考題:為什麼是off the trolley?)

15. What kind of word is "gotten"? Itmakes me shudder. Julie Marrs, Warrington

「Gotten」是個什麼玩意?聽了就打冷戰。

備註Gotten-Free。

16. "I"m good" for"I"m well". That"ll do for a start. Mike,Bridgend, Wales

「I』m good」而不是「I』m well」,這個怎麼樣。

備註在英國說I』m good其實是「不用了」,well才是真的表示「我很好」。被人問How are you的時候說I"m well就行了,不用非得Fine......那一套。

17. "Bangs" fora fringe of the hair. Philip Hall, Nottingham

管劉海叫「bangs」。

備註親親劉海劉海。

18. Take-out rather thantakeaway! Simon Ball, Worcester

管外賣叫take-out而不是takeaway!

備註Take sb. out有幹掉的意思,還有帶xxx出去玩(通常是夜店)的意思。

19. I enjoy Americanisms. I suspect even some Americans use themin a tongue-in-cheek manner? "That statement was the height of ridiculosity". Bob,Edinburgh

我喜歡美國俚語。好像有的美國人說俚語時都是開著玩笑打著趣的?「你這話真是荒唐可笑(ridiculosity)」。

備註Ridiculous大家應該不陌生吧,真要用到它的名詞說法,要記得是ridiculousness。

另外tongue-in-cheek就是拿舌頭頂著腮幫的意思,表示你在鬧著玩。

20. "A half hour"instead of "half an hour". EJB, Devon

「A half hour」而不是「half an hour」。

備註其實還真沒聽過誰說「a half hour」。。

21. A "heads up". Forexample, as in a business meeting. Lets do a "heads up" on thisissue. I have never been sure of the meaning. R Haworth, Marlborough

一個「heads up」。商業會談里會用到。這個問題先給大家一個heads up。

備註其實就是通知、提醒、知會的意思。猜測完整的片語是「heads up sticker notes」,粘在辦公桌前的便簽貼。如果你去找某個人發現TA不在,一般會在TA「一抬頭」就能看得到的地方留個便簽,提醒TA你來過,找他有事。

22. Train station. My teethare on edge every time I hear it. Who started it? Have they been punished? Chris Capewell, Queens Park, London

「Train station」,一聽這個我就咬牙切齒,誰先這麼說的?有人揍過他們沒?

備註在英國公交車站是bus stop,而火車站是railway station。

23. To put a list into alphabetical order is to "alphabetize it" - horrid! ChrisFackrell, York

按字母排序是「alphabetize it」,真可怕。

備註按字母排序除了可以說put into alphabetical order,還可以說arrange / sort alphabetically。

24. People that say "mybad" after a mistake. I don"t know how anything could be asannoying or lazy as that. Simon Williamson, Lymington, Hampshire

犯了錯說「my bad」。真是煩人、懶惰到家了。

備註請腦補加州 / 紐約大妞翻白眼搖頭的動作。

25. "Normalcy"instead of "normality" really irritates me. TomGabbutt, Huddersfield

表示平常用「normalcy」而不是「normality」,真煩人。

備註前面還造了ridiculosity,後面就不按套路來了。
