這是上一張專輯Highway 61 Revisited的收場曲，長長的歌詞中陸續出現一連串人物，包括歷史上顯赫的名字、神話中的角色，也包括畸零的邊緣人。它把這些虛虛實實的人物放在一連串夢魘般的情境中，渲染出一大片沒有出路的黑暗風景，以Desolation Row這個意象貫串全曲。有人說，這是「當代美國文化的俯瞰圖」。在專輯中這首歌長達十二分鐘，已經打破了Dylan歌曲的長度紀錄；在演唱會的現場，他則花了足足十五分鐘來詮釋這首歌。Dylan在這首歌的刷奏頗有西班牙佛萊明哥吉他的味道，在他的作品中比較少見。關於這首歌的論述同樣汗牛充棟，限於篇幅，只能先把歌曲中的專有名詞做個簡單的註解

Cinderella: 灰姑娘，格林童話中的人物。

Bette Davis: (1908-1989)黑白片時期美國著名的女明星兼歌星，在媒體上素以直言不諱聞名。

Romeo: 莎士比亞《羅密歐與茱麗葉》愛情悲劇的男主角。

Cain and Abel: 該隱和亞伯，舊約聖經中亞當和夏娃的兒子，Cain殺死了弟弟Abel，成為人類史上第一樁弒親血案，後來Cain便成為「殺兄弟者」的代名詞。

The Hunchback of Notre Dame: 即法國作家雨果筆下的《鐘樓怪人》故事主角。住在巴黎聖母院（即Notre Dame）鐘樓上的一名駝背畸形人。

Good Samaritan: 新約聖經中，耶穌提到一位被強盜洗劫毒打的旅人，在奄奄一息之際無人願意施以援手，最後是一位路過的撒瑪利亞人救了他。

Ophelia: 莎士比亞《哈姆雷特》劇中王子的戀人，因為王子裝瘋，傷痛欲絕，遂投水自盡。

Robin Hood: 羅賓漢，中世紀英國鄉野傳說中劫富濟貧的綠林好漢。

penny whistle: 六孔小豎笛，通常為錫制，起源於英國，因價廉而得名。

Phantom of the Opera: 1925年電影《歌劇魅影》的主角，在1943年重新攝製，後來並改編為百老匯舞台劇，主角是一位被毀容的指揮家，藏身巴黎歌劇院的地下水道中籌劃復仇。

Casanova: (1725-1798)義大利人，史上最知名的浪蕩男子之一，他的十二卷自傳英譯本在1966年問世，細數一生無數艷遇。此人與唐璜齊名，都是歷史知名的好色之徒。

Nero: (37-68)尼祿，古羅馬暴君，羅馬焚城時猶對著大火吟詩，是他最出名的暴行。尼祿亦以迫害基督徒聞名。

Neptune: 希臘神話中的海神，在荷馬史詩中，也掌管地震與海嘯。

Titanic: 鐵達尼號，人類史上最大的客輪，於1912年首航時沈沒，1500人罹難。

Ezra Pound: (1885-1972)二十世紀影響最大的美國詩人之一，意象派（imagism）的創始者。T. S. Eliot在詩壇嶄露頭角時，他曾經幫過不少忙。

T. S. Eliot: (1888-1965)另一位對美國詩壇影響極大的詩人，有《荒原》、《四首四重奏》等名作。論者以為，Dylan的這首歌受到Eliot的名詩"The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock"頗多影響。

Calypso: 荷馬史詩中的海上女神。另一義為西印度群島流行的「加力騷」歌曲，經常以時事為題材，風格詼諧逗趣。
