為什麼自由職業者叫 freelancer？

為什麼不可以是 free axer、free swordsman 或者更一般化一些 free knight、free warrior？古代的長矛兵比其它兵種更自由一些么？

Freelancer語源上來自於歐洲的僱傭兵,

The term was first used by Sir Walter Scott (1771–1832) in Ivanhoe to describe a "medieval mercenary warrior" or "free-lance" (indicating that the lance is not sworn to any lord"s services, not that the lance is available free of charge). [1]

lancer作為當時歐洲最強大的戰爭單位, 是僱傭軍的主要兵種, 所以lancer成了僱傭兵的代表. 於是有了freelancer這種僱傭兵的代名詞.

During the 15th, 16th and 17th centuries, these weapons, both mounted and unmounted, were so effective that lancers and pike men not only became a staple of every Western army, but also became highly sought-after mercenaries.[2]

而knight這個詞是"騎士", 屬於貴族體系內. 公侯伯子男下面就是准爵和騎士. knight本身還需要遵守騎士精神, 是不會成為僱傭軍的. 也就不具備了僱傭軍這種打一仗換個東家的自由職業軍人形象了.

@姚旭的答案已經很好了。特彆強調一下，為什麼不是free+其他名詞，需要了解的是一個背景，就是lance是需要花錢僱傭並且也十分貪財的一種warrior（不僅是一個人，這種唯利是圖拿錢賣命的團隊也叫lance），在當時戰爭年代是主流的作戰力量單位，不等同於江湖劍客或者貴族騎士。free lance原始的意思是自由的長矛騎士（團），不會誓從任何一個君主，只要給錢他就能為你僱傭工作。這和後來的自由職業者——沒有固定僱傭者，給錢就幹活——的形象很是契合。所以也就沒有free swordman等表達了。

特別注意這個詞的詞性很是特別。原先是一個名詞free lance (或free-lance), 後來變成了一個形容詞、副詞甚至動詞，而」自由職業者「需要加er變成freelancer。即使現在仍有一些人使用freelance作為」自由職業者「的名詞使用，但freelancer比較主流。例如：

Tom is a freelance. （名詞，較少這麼使用）

Tom is a freelancer. （freelancer較為多見）

Tom is a freelance photographer. （形容詞）

Tom works freelance as a photographer. （副詞）

Tom doesn"t go to work in the morning; he freelances as a photographer. （動詞）
