「Stochastic」與「Random」有何區別？

統計角度上講，都是隨機，但是：

random的幾率是相同的，比如說扔骰子，怎麼扔都是6分之1；然而

stochastic的每次幾率是可以不同的，比如說今天有50%的可能性下雨（氣壓、濕度各種影響），明天有77.7%的可能性下雨。

With random process, the same probability is assigned to all outcomes because each outcome has an equal chance of occurring. Typical examples of random processes include drawing a card from a deck, rolling a die, or tossing a coin. In a geographic context, an ornithologist might develop a GIS model to predict breeding bird occupancy within a wildlife refuge by assigning all nesting locations an equal random probability for occupancy.

With stochastic process, the likelihood or probability of any particular outcome can be specified and not all outcomes are equally likely of occurring. For example, an ornithologist may assign a greater probability that a bird will select a nesting location based on how far it is from the edge of the refuge or whether the location is shielded by a dense tree canopy.

看到這麼多人在聊Stochastic，我來給個蓋官頂帽的理解：

Stochastic 是 random + unpredictable 的含義，也就是說是包含了隨機性和不可預測性。

Eg：有人背地裡在一個特製骰子里把重心做的靠近六點的那個面，那麼若隨機的拋出，重複多次試驗，每次的當然具有隨機性，但是在猜測各面都等概率向上的基礎上，卻會存在出乎意料的可預測性，這顯然沒法說是Stochastic；然而換言之，你以為的等概率思考說成一個回歸模型的話，殘差圖就沒有Stochastic，因為一個有效的回歸模型的殘差圖就一定要有Stochastic，那就是說看上去既要隨機，而且還有不可預測哦，這樣才是一個valid的回歸模型～～

個人觀點stochastic比random不那麼隨意

stochastic一詞最開始起源於希臘詞語στ?χο? 意思是aim，然後Bortkiewicz用stochastic是取στοχαστικ??的making conjectures的意思

首先絕大部分情況是可以混用的，random variables和stochastic variables都有人用【一般用random】。不過random看起來有一些arbitrary的感覺；stochastic看起來更加強調雖然是隨機的，但是整體上有一些規律的意思。比如人們一般說stochastic process/stochastic differential equations【當然用random大家也知道是什麼東西，不過把SDE寫成RDE就不一定了】

當然大家說的stochastic看起來比random厲害肯定是對的，從這個角度找對應的中文應該是「或然」和「隨機」

很明顯日常生活中random的使用頻率要高得多，stochastic多用在科技領域。

兩個其實都是一個意思，但是random更口語化，另一個是書面語。如果把stochastic翻譯成隨機，random大概翻譯成隨便。

隨便造兩個句子你們感受下（這兩個句子的順序是隨機排列的）：

五百萬大獎得主是隨機抽取的

五百萬大獎得主是隨便選的

在英語環境中：

Stochastic 一般用來形容一個process（過程）。random形容一個變數。說一個隨機變數stochastic其實是在說它變化的過程stochastic。

另外，如果不詳細說明，很多在學科里會把random 看做是uniformly distributed。

巧了，這學期學校里開了兩門課。

其中有一門課名叫：Stochastic process

另一門課名叫：Random processes in engineering

從命名上就給人一種數學 vs. 工程的感覺，高下立判。

簡單地說，就是會不會講人話了。

舉一個栗子哈，在生活大爆炸里

Stochastic是sheldon會說的話，random是penny講的話

stochastic:

having a random probability distribution or pattern that may be analysed statistically but may not be predicted precisely.

random:

governed by or involving **equal chances** for each item.

個人認為：

Random：偏向於 1) 均勻分布 2) 未研究出良好性質的「隨機」變數（多見於定性分析）

Stochastic：不是均勻分布，且已經研究出該隨機過程/變數的一些有意義的性質

比如：

有人說 "噪音是Random的"，那我會傾向於認為是白噪音（均勻分布）或者是其隨機性尚未得到仔細研究的一種噪音（比如只需要定性的說有多少SNR的Random噪音，或者只是提一下有噪音噪音具體怎樣根本不重要）

而如果說 "噪音是Stochastic的"，那我會傾向於認為噪音的隨機性有一定規律，且已經有了一定的定性分析支持。典型的規律如比如隨時間變化，比如是個馬爾可夫過程等

還是約定俗成吧。學術上，隨機變數用random variable，隨機過程用一般用stochastic process，但wiki說也可用random process，見描述：

In probability theory, a stochastic (/sto??k?st?k/) process, or often random process, is a collection of random variables representing the evolution of some system of random values over time.

另外，由於random還有隨便的意思，論文為了嚴謹，用stochastic不會有異議。

來自wiki百科，個人認為從對stochasic process的英文說明可以看出與random的小差異，希望對後來疑問者有幫助。

明明就是一樣的語義啊，大多數時候可以互相替代。random口語化一點，stochastic process和 stochastic calculus，還有SDE，這些詞常用stochastic。

看到那種強行添油加醋解釋一番也是尷尬，畢竟逼乎....

突然想到研究生讀過的兩門課，probability and random variable和stochastic signal processing。

有什麼區別，真的是學過才深有體會，我覺得stochastic更加抽象，範圍更廣。

stochastic源自於古希臘語，而random則是古法語詞（比較有趣的是現代法語中已經不存在random這個詞語，取而代之的是來自拉丁文的aléatoire）。

stochastic與random是同義詞，意思上不存在本質的區別，但是會有一些常見的搭配，如stochastic process， random variable等

按照我的感覺：stochastic更強調動態性，而random是靜態的更多一些。stochastic強調過程的分析，random只看結果

這就好比一個老外在Quora上問，中文裡「沒問題」和「行啊」有啥區別一樣。

區別是第一個單詞不認識而第二個單詞認識哈哈哈哈哈哈

s隨的是機會，r隨的是幾率。幾率是死的機會是活的。
