牛津高階單詞中的小點是什麼作用？

用小點把單詞分成幾個部分看著不像是劃分音節用的也不像是劃分前綴詞根後綴的求解？
補充問題，同一個單詞在牛津高階和朗文上所標註的小點並不相同，這是為什麼？

A: OALD（牛津高階）的小點（·）shows where a word can be broken 指詞目中的分隔點（如 af·fect ），表示單詞可斷開處。

LDOCE（朗文）的小點（·）「把詞目詞分成若干音節，還表示在書寫到一行的末尾時可在該處斷開（即用連字元將其分隔開移行）」，LDOCE 的這種說法（做法）不如 OALD 嚴謹，因為 word break 除了和音節（pronunciation）有關，還和單詞結構（ construction）有關。

Q:如果是表示此處可以轉行的話，那麼這種有點的位置是根據什麼來確定的？

A:一些 Style Guide （https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Style_guide ）專門有章節介紹比如：

舉幾個例子：

abases 有兩個音節，但是絕對不能分隔它（比如 aba-ses、abas-es 都是不對的）；

unhelpful ，un-helpful 比 unhelp-ful 好；

atmosphere ，分隔為 atmos-phere ，但是 biosphere 應該分隔為 bio-sphere 。

查 OALD 和 LDOCE 的 biosphere 條，圓點分別為 bio·sphere 和 bi·o·sphere ，牛津只有一個圓點（·），朗文有兩個圓點（表示 bi·o·sphere 有三個音節）。

甚至有專門的 New Oxford Spelling Dictionary 來指導人們做 word division 。

啥叫 word break 呢？

OALD: word break noun

《牛津高階英漢雙解詞典》（第 8 版）第 xix 頁：

· in headword (af·fect), shows where a word can be broken 指詞目中的分隔點（如 af·fect ），表示單詞可斷開處。

不過這斷開處和音節分隔其實基本就是一回事，《牛津美式英語詞典》(英漢雙解)（藍本 Oxford American Dictionary for learners of English ）第 x 頁：

Dots in a word show where it divides into syllables. 詞目中的分隔符表示單詞音節的分割。

也就是說，牛津的這兩本詞典，對這個點（·）說法還不一樣。

不過題主問的「牛津高階」，我覺得就是《牛津高階英漢雙解詞典》（藍本 Oxford Advanced Learner"s Dictionary ）。我恰好去年因為發現在線版的 OALD Oxford Learner"s Dictionaries 詞頭和紙版相比，並沒有這個點（·），發郵件諮詢過，編輯解答如下：

Dear Customer,
Thank you for your email. There are no syllable division markers in the headwords for the Oxford Advanced Learner"s Dictionary, either online or in print.
The headwords in the print dictionary are divided with the · symbol, but this is to show where the word can be broken across a line, rather than where the syllables are (though of course sometimes they correspond). For example, the word "examination" is shown as exam·in·ation, meaning that if it had to be divided across a line the form could be:
exam- ination
OR
examin- ation
These symbols are not given in the online dictionary for reasons of simplicity.
