Say over again, and yet once over again,

That thou dost love me. Though the word repeated

 你會把它看成一支「布谷鳥的歌曲」;

Should seem `a cuckoo-song," as thou dost treat it.

Remember, never to the hill or plain,

Valley and wood, without her cuckoo-strain

Comes the fresh Spring in all her green completed.

Beloved, I, amid the darkness greeted

By a doubtful spirit-voice, in that doubt"s pain

Cry, ... `Speak once more ... thou lovest!" Who can fear

Too many stars, though each in heaven shall roll, --

太多的星,即使每顆都在太空轉動;

Too many flowers, though each shall crown the year?

Say thou dost love me, love me, love me -- toll

The silver iterance! -- only minding, Dear,

To love me also in silence with thy soul.

(22)

When our two souls stan up erect and strong,

Face to face, silent, drawing nigh and nigher,

Util the lengthening wings break into fire

At each curved point, -- what bitter wrong

Can the earth do to us, that we should not long

Be here contented? Think. In mounting higher,

The angels would press on us and aspire

To drop some golden orb of perfect song

Into our deep, dear silence. Let us stay

Rather on earth, Beloved, -- where the unfit

Contrarious moods of men recoil away

And isolate pure spirits, and permit

A place to stand and love in for a day,

With darkness and the death-hour rounding it.

(32)

The first time that the sun rose on thine oath

To love me, I looked forward to the moon

To slacken all those bonds which seemed too soon

And quickly tied to make a lasting troath.

Quick-loving hearts, I thought, may quickly loathe;

And, looking on myself, I seemed not one

For such man"s love! -- more like an out-of-tune

Worn voil, a good singer would be wroth

To spoil his song with, and which, snatched in haste,

Is laid down at the first ill-sounding note.

I did not wrong myself so, but I placed

A wrong on _thee_. For perfect strains may float

"Neath master-hands, from instruments defaced, --

And great souls, at one stroke, may do and dote.

(43)

How do I love thee? Let me count the ways.

I love thee to the depth and breadth and height

My soul can reach, when feeling out of sight

For the ends of Being and ideal Grace.

I love thee to the level of every day"s

Most quiet need, by sun and candlelight.

I love thee freely, as men strive for Right;

I love thee purely, as they turn from Praise.

I love with a passion put to use

In my old griefs, and with my childhood"s faith.

I love thee with a love I seemed to lose

With my lost saints, -- I love thee with the breath,

Smiles, tears, of all my life! -- and, if God choose,

I shall but love thee better after death.

「Elizabeth Barrett was inspired by a flash of true genius when she rushed into the drawing room and said that here, where we live and work, is the true place for the poet.」 「a sense of life in general, of people who are unmistakably Victorian, wrestling with the problems of their own time, all brightened, intensified and compacted by the fire of poetry…Aurora Leigh, with her passionate interest in social questions, her conflict as artist and woman, her longing for knowledge and freedom, is the true daughter of her age.」

The Flea. By John Donne.

Mark but this flea, and mark in this,

How little that which thou deniest me is,

It sucks me first and now sucks thee,

And in this flea our two bloods mingles be;

Thou know"st that this cannot be said.

A sin,nor shame,nor loss of maidenhead

Yet this enjoys before it woo,

And pampered swells with one blood made of two,

And this, alas,is more than we would do.

Oh stay, there lives in one flea spare,

Where we almost any more than married one.

Our marriage bed,and marriage temple is,

Though parents grudge,and you,we"are met,

And cloistered in these living walls of jet.

Though use make you apt to kill me,

Let not to that,self-murder added be,

And sacrilege, three sins in killing three.

Curl and sudden,has thou since.

Purpled thy nail,in blood of innocence?

Wherein could this flea guilty be,

Except in that drop which it sucked from thee?

Find"st not thy self, nor me the weaker now,

Just so much honor, when thou yield"st to me,

Will waste,as this flea"s death took life from thee.

Last Sonnet (Bright Star)

by John Keats

Bright Star, would I were steadfast as thou art--

Not in lone splendour hung aloft the night,

And watching, with eternal lids apart,

Like Nature"s patient sleepless Eremite,

The moving waters at their priest-like task

Of pure ablution round earths human shores,

Or gazing on the new soft-fallen mask

Of snow upon the mountains and the moors--

No--yet still steadfast, still unchangeable,

Pillow"d upon my fair love"s ripe ning breast,

To feel for ever its soft fall and swell,

Awake for ever in a s weet unrest,

Still, still to hear her tender-taken breath,

And so live ever--or else swoon to death.

用聖水給世人居住的海岸沐浴;

給山峰和原野罩上一副面具;

But you didn"t.

Remember the day I borrowed your brand

new car and dented it?

I thought you"d kill me, but you didn"t.

And remember the time I dragged you to the beach,

and you said it would rain, and it did?

I thought you"d say, "I told you so." But you didn"t.

Do you remember the time I flirted with all

the guys to make you jealous, and you were?

I thought you"d leave, but you didn"t.

Do you remember the time I spilled strawberry pie

all over your car rug?

I thought you"d hit me, but you didn"t.

And remember the time I forgot to tell you the dance

was formal and you showed up in jeans?

I thought you"d drop me, but you didn"t.

Yes, there were lots of things you didn"t do.

But you put up with me, and loved me, and protected me.

There were lots of things I wanted to make up to you

when you returned from Vietnam.

But you didn"t.

La Figlia Che Piange (The Weeping Girl)

---T.S. Eliot

"O quam te memorem virgo"

STAND on the highest pavement of the stair --

Lean on a garden urn --

Weave, weave the sunlight in your hair --

Clasp your flowers to you with a pained suprise --

Fling them to the ground and turn

With a fugitive resentment in your eyes:

But weave, weave the sunlight in your hair.

So I would have had him leave,

So I would have had her stand and grieve,

So he would have left

As the soul leaves the body torn and bruised,

As the mind deserts the body it has used.

I should find

Some way incomparably light and deft,

Some way we both should understand,

Simple and faithless as a smile and a shake of the hand.

She turned away, but with the autumn weather

Compelled my imagination many days,

Many days and many hours:

Her hair over her arms and her arms full of flowers.

And I wonder how they should have been together!

I should have lost a gesture and a pose.

Sometimes these cogitations still amaze

The troubled midnight, and the noon"s repose.

Annabel Lee

It was many and many a year ago,

In a kingdom by the sea,

That a maiden there lived whom you may know

By the name of ANNABEL LEE;

And this maiden she lived with no other thought

Than to love and be loved by me.

--------------------------------

I was a child and she was a child,

In this kingdom by the sea;

But we loved with a love that was more than love —

I and my Annabel Lee;

With a love that the winged seraphs of heaven

Coveted her and me.

--------------------------------

And this was the reason that, long ago,

In this kingdom by the sea,

A wind blew out of a cloud, chilling

My beautiful Annabel Lee;

So that her highborn kinsman came

And bore her away from me,

To shut her up in a sepulchre

In this kingdom by the sea.

--------------------------------

The angels, not half so happy in heaven,

Went envying her and me —

Yes! — that was the reason (as all men know,

In this kingdom by the sea)

That the wind came out of the cloud by night,

Chilling and killing my Annabel Lee.

--------------------------------

But our love it was stronger by far than the love

Of those who were older than we —

Of many far wiser than we —

And neither the angels in heaven above,

Nor the demons down under the sea,

Can ever dissever my soul from the soul

Of the beautiful Annabel Lee.

--------------------------------

For the moon never beams without bringing me dreams

Of the beautiful Annabel Lee;

And the stars never rise but I feel the bright eyes

Of the beautiful Annabel Lee;

And so, all the night tide, I lie down by the side

Of my darling — my darling — my life and my bride,

In her sepulchre there by the sea,

In her tomb by the sounding sea.

她的名字叫安娜貝爾·麗;

在這海邊的王國里;

我和我的安娜貝爾·麗;

我美麗的安娜貝爾·麗;

夢見我美麗的安娜貝爾·麗;

也依然和我在一起;
