個人感覺唱片公司機械的造星過程——泛指整個娛樂市場。

因為這首歌在說一個做夢要當明星的人，

而下一首歌則是在說pink floyd樂隊自己在這個圈子裡的遭遇

《Welcome to the machine》是Pink Floyd在《Wish you were here》這張專輯中批判性較強的兩首之一，另一首是《Have a cigar》。我很同意這首歌諷刺唱片產業的觀點，維基百科上也能找到相同的解釋。這一點在《Have a cigar》中這種諷刺意味表現得更加赤裸裸，Roger Waters 把這兩首放在一張專輯裡面我認為是有相通之處的。

不過我認為這首歌的意味不止於此。

談一下我的理解，『machine』在這裡當然不是單純『機器』的意思，我更傾向於認為它表示社會準則。而這首歌諷刺了人們在社會準則面前不知不覺的從眾與妥協。用社會心理學的話說就是Conformity。歌詞是對一個小男孩說的，處於很像我們大多數人一樣叛逆的青少年時期。他不顧父母的反對買吉他，不愛上學，自以為不是和別人一樣被洗腦的傻瓜。他夢想成為搖滾明星，彈得一手好琴，開著豪車出入高級餐廳。而實際上這種看似『酷』與『叛逆』只是他所扮演的社會角色，是他竭力去滿足的人們對於『酷』的標籤。為了滿足社會對於他的期望，小男孩演變出了叛逆的少年和未來的搖滾明星，然而只是一個已經設計好的社會角色，叛逆的背後其實是遵從，就像是巨大的社會機器中的一個流水線工人一般。

The plot centers on an aspiring musician getting signed by a seedy executive to the music industry (the "Machine").
