思源黑體的 DemiLight / Normal 字重因何而生？

思源黑體的 Adobe 官方版本有 Normal 字重，
對應 Noto Sans CJK 的 DemiLight 字重。
這兩個字重和 Regular 字重看起來粗細分明程度不算明顯啊…

為什麼 Adobe 要引入這種略細的字重呢？

我決定趕在其他版友面前給出官方答案（其實是小林劍順口說出來的事實）。

這官方答案恐怕不是資深字體研究者們所期望的、他們更喜歡許瀚文老師的說法：

「Normal 和 Regular 字重分別適用於不同的黑白背景排版場合。」

某天，我鑽牛角尖在 GitHub 問官方：「是否方便就 Source Han Sans 的 Light 和 ExtraLight 之間再出一個 Thin 字重、以搭配 Helvetica Neue 的 Thin 字重使用？」

當時我還給出了圖樣。

小林劍（Source Han Sans 專案技術主管）本人的答覆：

To be clear, I am aware of the difference, but my point is that the difference is extremely subtle, and 99% of users wouldn"t give it a second thought. There is nothing bad or displeasing about how it looks.
About the current selection of weights, we very much wanted to limit the number of weights to six, but harmonization with Noto Sans and Roboto gave birth to a seventh weight. If the Normal weight were used with Noto Sans or Roboto, in lieu of the seventh weight (Regular), the difference would be more striking, much more than the screenshot that you provided, regardless of the display mode.

我翻譯一下：

咱得先說清楚，我並沒有把這種差異不當一回事，但我要指出的是（你說的）這個差異可謂微妙至極、九成九的用戶都會把它們搞混。我橫豎看了半天、都沒覺得有令人不爽的問題。

說到目前的字重劃分，我們非常希望能夠將其控制在六個字重之內…但是，第七個字重卻是與 Noto Sans 和 Roboto 字體的字重相互調諧的產物。倘若讓 Normal 字重代替第七個字重（現在的 Regular 字重）、與 Noto Sans 或 Roboto 混搭的話，肯定會有更惹人注目的視覺差異、且比你給的那張擷圖當中的例子更甚（無論用怎樣的模式來顯示）。

於是，答案就在上文的粗體文本當中。

這種問題儘管信任小林劍就好，

「小林劍先生在 CJK 領域的經驗極端豐富」…

更何況他是當事人。
