美國金融業一般把投資銀行按照規模分為三類，即大型（Bulge Bracket），中型（Middle Market）和小型（Boutique）。按照分支機構和業務範圍，也可以分為全國性和地區性兩類。

Bulge Bracket有「大量」「批量」的意思，據說是因為大型投資銀行在美國國債和機構債券的拍賣中，總是能買下較大的份額。Middle

Market一般是指規模在5千萬到10億美元之間的投資銀行業務，或者股權價值在5億美元到50億美元之間的客戶，中型投資銀行主要為這些客戶服務。
Boutique直譯為精品店、專賣店，一般只經營某一特定業務，或為某一特定行業提供投資銀行服務。

投資銀行的規模不一定與其聲望、盈利能力成正比。小型投資銀行由於專註於某一領域，往往能做出很大成就，例如在併購領域名列前茅的瑞德集團
（Lazard Ltd），Greenhill Co.以及Evercore
Partners等。中型投資銀行也有不少名氣比較大的上市公司，如Jefferies Co, Raymond James，KBW
Inc, Piper Jaffray, Thomas Weisel, Cowen等；未上市的較知名的中型投資銀行則有Robert W.
Baird，William Blair等。

在完成大型上市或併購項目時，公司需要在報紙上進行公告，並需要公開投行的名字。參與項目的投行名字一般都會印在公告的封面。而主要的牽頭行的名字會列在最上面，並且logo比其他的參與投行都大，久而久之，這些投行就被稱為bulge bracket
