「I don"t know half of you half as well as I should like and I like less than half of you, half as well as you deserve.」

Here the quote in context:
"BILBO: Today is my One Hundred and Eleventh birthday! (the crowd cheer and raise their glasses)

HOBBIT: Happy Birthday!

BILBO: Alas, elevnty-one years is far too short a time to live among such excellent and admirable hobbits. (the hobbits cheer) I don"t know half of you half as well as I should like and I like less than half of you, half as well as you deserve. (there is confused silence. Gandalf smirks)"

3) Meaning of the original quote: "I don"t know half of you half as well as I should like and I like less than half of you, half as well as you deserve."

Bilbo says first that he should like to know all of them very well (because they are worth it). However, he only knows less than half of them very well.
(but that is because he did not have the time to know them all very well, probably)

Bilbo says then that he should like all of them as well as they deserve. However, he only likes less than half of them; and even those, he likes them half as well as they deserve.
(but that is because he does not know them all very well, otherwise he would probably like them all)

The changed quote has a similar meaning, but it is a little more complicated because of the repetition of "like" in the first part

I don"t know half of you half as well as I should like."
I don"t know half of you half as well as I should like to know half of you.
這裡的"should like"應該是「would like」的第一人稱,舊英式用法。
I know you this well.
+
I should like to know you this well.
=
I know you as well as I should like to know you.
I know half of you as well as I should like to know half of you.
I know you half as well as I should like to know you.
I know half of you half as well as I should like to know half of you.
-加否定「not」 version 1
NOT I know half of you half as well as I should like to know half of you.
「It"s not the case that I know half of you half as well as I should like to know half of you」
-加否定"not" version 2
I know NOT half of you half as well as I should like to know half of you.
"I know fewer than half of you half as well as I should like to know fewer half of you"
(這裡的not half of you語義上可以指比一半多或者比一半少,語用上我理解為fewer than half of you,所以是「不到一半人」)
-加否定「not」 version 3
I know half of you NOT half as well as I should like to know half of you.
"I know half of you less than half as well as I should like to know half of you."
(同上,這裡的not half as well語義上可以指比我想要了解的程度的一半多「more than I should like to know」或者比我想要了解的程度的一半少「less than I should like to know」,這裡語用理解成後者)

六個人:A B C D E F
I should like to know you this much = level 10
half as well as I should like to know you this much = level 5
I like half of you half as well as I should like":
l like A at level 5, I like B at level 5, I like C at level 5, D-0, E-0, F-0
否定version 1: I like A at level 5, I like B at level 5, I like C at level 5, D-5, E-0, F-0

---------------------
I like less than half of you, half as well as you deserve.
I like less than half of you, half as well as you deserve me to like you.
I like you this much.
+
You deserve me to like you this much.
=
I like you as well as you deserve me to like you.
I like you half as well as you deserve me to like you.
-加另一個 less than half
I like less than half of you as well as you deserve me to like you.
I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve me to like you.

「I don"t know half of you half as well as I should like and I like less than half of you, half as well as you deserve.」

I don"t know half of you half as well as I should like
and I like less than half of you, half as well as you deserve.

I don"t know half of you
half as well as I should like

and I like less than half of you,
half as well as you deserve.

I don"t know half of you half as well as I should like (to know)
I know less than 50% of you. And among the 50%, my capacity of knowing is less than 50% of what it"s supposed to be.
So both the quantity(1) of people and the quality of knowing (1) is less than 50%.

I like less than half of you, half as well as you deserve.
Here the negation is in "less" where as in the first one the negation is "not".
Is there a difference in scope? Can "less" negate the second half?
