John Russell Bartlett的Dictionary Of Americanisms - A Glossary of Words And Phrases Usually Regarded As Peculiar To The United States在1840年代收錄了這個俚語，書中說：
"As happy as a clam at high water," is a very common expression in those parts of the coast of New England where clams are found.（~是新英格蘭地區常見蛤蜊的海岸邊很常見的一種英語表達方式。）
同年，Southern Literary Messenger from Richmond中也提到這個短語：
