Introduction

For this companion volume to A New Earth, I selected passages from the original book that felt particularly suitable for inspirational or meditative reading. For this reason I do not recommend that you read this book straight through from cover to cover. It would be far more beneficial to read, at the most, one chapter at a time, stopping at and perhaps rereading whatever passages elicit an inner response. Then let the words sink in and sense the truth to which they point, which is, of course, already within you. It can also be helpful to open the book at random occasionally, read one page or just one passage and let the words point the way to that dimension deep within that is beyond words, beyond thought. The truth to which the words point, the timeless dimension of consciousness, cannot be arrived at through discursive thought and conceptual understanding.

This book is not a condensed version of A New Earth. Although it contains some of the most powerful pointers from the original book, there is relatively little here about the ego and nothing about the pain-body. In other words: If you want to understand and thus be able to detect those mental-emotional patterns within you that block the arising of a new consciousness, you have to go to the original book.

This book will be of greatest benefit to those who have already read A New Earth – perhaps more than once – responded to it deeply, and experienced some degree of inner transformation through it. The informational content of this book is of relatively little importance. You read it not so much to learn something new, but to go deeper, become more present, awaken out of the stream of incessant and compulsive thinking. If there is no inner recognition, however distant or fleeting, of that to which the words point, then the words will be quite meaningless and remain no more than abstract concepts. If there is such a recognition, however, it means that the awakened consciousness is beginning to emerge from within you and the words you are reading help to draw it out. If you come across passages in this book that you feel are powerful, I want you to realize that what you are feeling is your own spiritual power, that is to say who you are in your essence. Only Spirit can recognize Spirit.

Going Beyond Thought 超越思維

Thinking is no more than a tiny aspect of the totality of consciousness, the totality of who you are.

What is arising now is not a new belief system, a new religion, spiritual ideology, or mythology. We are coming to the end not only of mythologies but also of ideologies and belief systems. The change goes deeper than the content of your mind, deeper than your thoughts. In fact, at the heart of the new consciousness is the transcendence of thought, the newfound ability of rising above thought, of realizing a dimension within yourself that is infinitely more vast than thought.

You then no longer derive your identity, your sense of who you are, from the stream of thinking that in the old consciousness you take to be yourself. What a liberation to realize that the 「voice in my head」 is not who I am.

Who am I then? The one who sees that. The awareness that is prior to thought, the space in which the thought – or the emotion or sense perception – happens.

The primary cause of unhappiness is never the situation but your thoughts about it.

Be aware of the thoughts you are thinking. Separate them from the situation, which is always neutral, which always is as it is. There is the situation or the fact, and here are my thoughts about it. Instead of making up stories, stay with the facts. For example, 「I am ruined」 is a story. It limits you and prevents you from taking effective action. 「I have fifty cents left in my bank account」 is a fact. Facing facts is always empowering. Be aware that what you think, to a large extent, creates the emotions that you feel. See the link between your thinking and your emotions. Rather than being your thoughts and emotions, be the awareness behind them.

「The wisdom of this world is folly with God,」 says the Bible. What is the wisdom of this world? The movement of thought, and meaning that is defined exclusively by thought.

Thinking isolates a situation or event and calls it good or bad, as if it had a separate existence. Through excessive reliance on thinking, reality becomes fragmented. This fragmentation is an illusion, but it seems very real while you are trapped in it. And yet the universe is an indivisible whole in which all things are interconnected, in which nothing exists in isolation.

The deeper interconnectedness of all things and events implies that the mental labels of 「good」 and bad」 are ultimately illusory. They always imply a limited perspective and so are true only relatively and temporarily.

There are no random events, nor are there events or things that exist by and for themselves, in isolation. The atoms that make up your body were once forged inside stars, and the causes of even the smallest event are virtually infinite and connected with the whole in incomprehensible ways.

If you wanted to trace back the cause of any event, you would have to go back all the way to the beginning of creation. The cosmos is not chaotic. The very word cosmos means order. But this is not an order the human mind can ever comprehend, although it can sometimes glimpse it.

When we go into a forest that has not been interfered with by man, our thinking mind will see only disorder and chaos all around us. It won』t even be able to differentiate between life (good) and death (bad) anymore since everywhere new life grows out of rotting and decaying matter. Only if we are still enough inside and the noise of thinking subsides can we become aware that there is a hidden harmony here, a sacredness, a higher order in which everything has its perfect place and could not be other than what it is and the way it is.

The mind is more comfortable in a landscaped park because it has been planned through thought; it has not grown organically. There is an order here that the mind can understand. In the forest, there is an incomprehensible order that to the mind looks like chaos. It is beyond the mental categories of good and bad. You cannot understand it through thought, but you can sense it when you let go of thought, become still and alert, and don"t try to understand or explain. Only then can you be aware of the sacredness of the forest. As soon as you sense that hidden harmony, that sacredness, you realize you are not separate from it, and when you realize that, you become a conscious participant in it. In this way, nature can help you become realigned with the wholeness of life.

This is most people"s reality: As soon as something is perceived, it is named, interpreted, compared with something else, liked, disliked, or called good or bad by the phantom self, the ego. They are imprisoned in thought forms, in object consciousness.

You do not awaken spiritually until the compulsive and unconscious naming ceases, or at least you become aware of it and thus are able to observe it as it happens. It is through this constant naming that the ego remains in place as the unobserved mind. Whenever it ceases and even when you just become aware of it, there is inner space, and you are not possessed by the mind anymore.

Most people spend their entire life imprisoned within the confines of their own thoughts. They never go beyond a narrow, mind-made, personalized sense of self that is conditioned by the past.

In you, as in each human being, there is a dimension of consciousness far deeper than thought. It is the very essence of who you are. We may call it presence, awareness, the unconditioned consciousness. In the ancient teachings, it is the Christ within, or your Buddha nature.

Finding that dimension frees you and the world from the suffering you inflict on yourself and others when the mind-made 「little me」 is all you know and runs your life. Love, joy, creative expansion, and lasting inner peace cannot come into your life except through that unconditioned dimension of consciousness.

If you can recognize, even occasionally, the thoughts that go through your mind as just thoughts, if you can witness your own mental-emotional reactive patterns as they happen, then that dimension is already emerging in you as the awareness in which thoughts and emotions happen — the timeless inner space in which the content of your life unfolds.

絕大多數人畢生都將自己囚禁在他們自己的思維之中。他們從未超越過一個受過去制約的、狹小的、人為的、貼上個人標籤的自我感。

The stream of thinking has enormous momentum that can easily drag you along with it. Every thought pretends that it matters so much. It wants to draw your attention in completely.

Here is a new spiritual practice for you: don』t take your thoughts too seriously.

How easy it is for people to become trapped in their conceptual prisons. The human mind, in its desire to know, understand, and control, mistakes

its opinions and viewpoints for the truth. It says: this is how it is. You have to be larger than thought to realize that however you interpret 「your life」 or someone else』s life or behavior, however you judge any situation, it is no more than a viewpoint, one of many possible perspectives. It is no more than a bundle of thoughts. But reality is one unified whole, in which all things are interwoven, where nothing exists in and by itself. Thinking fragments reality — it cuts it up into conceptual bits and pieces.

The thinking mind is a useful and powerful tool, but it is also very limiting when it takes over your life completely, when you don』t realize that it is only a small aspect of the consciousness that you are.

人們是多麼容易受困於自己觀念的牢籠啊。

Wisdom is not a product of thought. The deep knowing that is wisdom arises through the simple act of giving someone or something your full attention. Attention is primordial intelligence, consciousness itself. It dissolves the barriers created by conceptual thought, and with this comes the recognition that nothing exists in and by itself. It joins the perceiver and the perceived in a unifying field of awareness. It is the healer of separation.

Whenever you are immersed in compulsive thinking, you are avoiding what is. You don』t want to be where you are. Here, Now.

Dogmas — religious, political, scientific— arise out of the erroneous belief that thought can encapsulate reality or the truth. Dogmas are collective conceptual prisons. And the strange thing is that people love their prison cells because they give them a sense of security and a false sense of 「I know.」

Nothing has inflicted more suffering on humanity than its dogmas. It is true that every dogma crumbles sooner or later, because reality will eventually disclose its falseness; however, unless the basic delusion of it is seen for what it is, it will be replaced by others.

What is this basic delusion? Identification with thought.

一切教條 –宗教的、政治的、科學的 –都來自於一個錯誤的信念,那就是我們以為思考可以囊括現實或是真理 。教條是集體觀念組成的監獄。奇怪的是,人們熱愛他們的牢房,因為這令他們有一種安全感,和一種錯誤的「我知道」的感覺。

Spiritual awakening is awakening from the dream of thought.

The realm of consciousness is much vaster than thought can grasp. When you no longer believe everything you think, you step out of thought and see clearly that the thinker is not who you are.

意識的領域比思維 所能攫取的要大得多。當你不再認同你所想的,你就從思維中解脫出來,並且清晰地認識到那個思考者並不是你。


The mind exists in a state of 「not enough」 and so is always greedy for more. When you are identified with mind, you get bored and restless very easily. Boredom means the mind is hungry for more stimulus, more food for thought, and its hunger is not being satisfied.

When you feel bored, you can satisfy the mind』s hunger by picking up a magazine, making a phone call, switching on the TV, surfing the web,

going shopping, or — and this is not uncommon — transferring the mental sense of lack and its need for more to the body and satisfy it briefly by ingesting more food.

Or you can stay bored and restless and observe what it feels like to be bored and restless. As you bring awareness to the feeling, there is suddenly some space and stillness around it, as it were. A little at first, but as the sense of inner space grows, the feeling of boredom will begin to diminish in intensity and significance. So even boredom can teach you who you are and who you are not.

You discover that a 「bored person」 is not who you are. Boredom is simply a conditioned energy movement within you. Neither are you an angry, sad, or fearful person. Boredom, anger, sadness, or fear are not 「yours,」 not personal. They are conditions of the human mind. They come and go.

Nothing that comes and goes is you. 「I am bored.」 Who knows this? 「I am angry, sad, afraid.」 Who knows this? You are the knowing, not the condition that is known.

頭腦總是處於「不夠」的狀態,它總是想要更多。當你與頭腦 認同時,你很容易變得厭倦和焦躁不安。厭倦意味著頭腦 渴求更多刺激,思維 想要更多食物,但它的饑渴沒有得到滿足。

Prejudice of any kind implies that you are identified with the thinking mind. It means you don』t see the other human being anymore, but only your own concept of that human being. To reduce the aliveness of another human being to a concept is already a form of violence.

任何偏見都意味著你與思考的頭腦 認同了。這表示你再也看不到這個人,而只是看到你對這個人的看法。將另一個人的生命活力貶低至一個看法已經是一種暴力行為。


Thinking that is not rooted in awareness becomes self-serving and dysfunctional. Cleverness devoid of wisdom is extremely dangerous and destructive. That is the current state of most of humanity. The amplification of thought as science and technology, although intrinsically neither good nor bad, has also become destructive because so often the thinking out of which it comes has no roots in awareness.

The next step in human evolution is to transcend thought. This is now our urgent task. It doesn』t mean not to think anymore, but simply not to be completely identified with thought, possessed by thought.

那些不是根植於覺知的思考是自私且功能失調的。缺乏智慧的聰明是極端危險和具有破壞性的。這是大多數人類的現狀。儘管關於科技的思考的增強從本質上講無所謂好壞,但它已經成為破壞性的,因為絕大多數這類思考並沒有紮根於覺知。

Feel the energy of your inner body. Immediately mental noise slows down or ceases. Feel it in your hands, your feet, your abdomen, your chest. Feel the life that you are, the life that animates the body.

The body then becomes a doorway, so to speak, into a deeper sense of aliveness underneath the fluctuating emotions and underneath your thinking.

感覺你內在身體的能量。立刻你頭腦的噪音就會慢下來或者平息。在你的手部、腳部、腹部、胸部,去感受它。感受那個你真正所是的生命,那個賦予你的身體活力的生命。

There is an aliveness in you that you can feel with your entire Being, not just in the head. Every cell is alive in that presence in which you don』t

need to think. Yet, in that state, if thought is required for some practical purpose, it is there. The mind can still operate, and it operates beautifully when the greater intelligence that you are uses it and expresses itself through it.

You may have overlooked that brief periods in which you are 「conscious without thought」 are already occurring naturally and spontaneously in your life. You may be engaged in some manual activity, or walking across the room, or waiting at the airline counter, and be so completely present that the usual mental static of thought subsides and is replaced by an aware presence. Or you may find yourself looking at the sky or listening to someone without any inner mental commentary. Your perceptions become crystal clear, unclouded by thought.

To the mind, all this is not significant, because it has 「more important」 things to think about. It is also not memorable, and that』s why you may have overlooked that it is already happening.

The truth is that it is the most significant thing that can happen to you. It is the beginning of a shift from thinking to aware presence.

Become at ease with the state of 「not knowing.」 This takes you beyond mind because the mind is always trying to conclude and interpret. It is afraid of not knowing. So, when you can be at ease with not knowing, you have already gone beyond the mind. A deeper knowing that is non-conceptual then arises out of that state.

Mastery of life is the opposite of control. You become aligned with the greater consciousness. It acts, speaks, does the works.

君專註一事,一心不能二用,自然無法顧及別人的想法。
君可曾聞廢寢忘食?
真要專註,心在一處,身外無物。

心念念在所做之事,自不思過往,自不慮將來,已在當下。


當你能明白以下兩點,就會自然而然的做到了。
1,思考過去和將來對當下的做事沒有任何好處。
2,人是為自己而活,關注內心的想法!


樓主有沒有問過自己:我為什麼會在乎別人的看法?我需要從別人的看法中獲得什麼?認可嗎?讚賞嗎?為什麼會這樣子呢?
害怕被否定嗎?害怕被責備嗎?如果真的被否定了,被責備了,後果會是什麼呢?會很嚴重嗎?會是自己能承擔能面對的嗎?
這其實是內心安全感缺乏的問題。如何解決,答案其實在樓主自己心底。

佛語中有句話叫:活在因地。
管理學中有句話叫:以終為始。

想像一下,幾十年過後,當你老去離開這個世界的時候,你希望你自己是如何被人記住被人懷念的?一個怎樣的父母、朋友、子女、同事?問問自己,寫下來。這個答案,就是你處事做人的原則。當你始終堅持按這個原則處事做人的時候,你會發現,別人的看法想法不再那麼重要了,你做著你認為正確的事情!你的價值觀形成。你找到了你自己,真正想要成為的自己。這才是最大的解脫,最根本的解決辦法。

慢慢來,一切都來得及。

最近郭德綱有段拜訪很火,有句話叫人生需要經歷。經歷了三歲就懂,不經歷九十五也不明白。
關於這個問題,我的感觸是,要經歷過生死。見過生的喜悅,也體會過死的悲哀。
生死一線,人生苦短。深刻認識這一點,就明白自己該怎麼做了。


在意什麼就被什麼所束縛!

你唱歌不好聽」、「你穿這個顏色不好看」、「女孩子學什麼數學」.......諸如此類評頭論足的話每個人都聽過無數次。

在難過的同時,你有想過你為什麼要聽取、相信他們的評論嗎?

你和自己簽下的魔鬼契約。

我們都在追求自由,可是我們真正的自由嗎?

我們並不自由,那麼阻礙我們自由的最大敵人是誰呢?

你猜對了,這個最大的敵人,就是我們自己!

你看嬰兒在玩耍的時候,其實他們絕大多數都是自由的。

他們不會去考慮社會責任,他們不會擔心自己被人嘲笑,他們不會害怕失敗或者是被拒絕,他們最真誠的表達的自己的情緒,他們不會害怕去愛,而且當他們看到愛時,會跟愛一起融化。

那麼我們是從什麼時候開始不自由的呢?

它就發生在我們被整個家庭和社會「馴化」的過程或者說是我們逐漸被社會化的過程中。

那一年你4歲,非常喜歡唱歌。你有著動聽的躍動的嗓音並且唱歌讓你快樂。

有一天你媽媽加班到了晚上8點才回家,你不知道她今天跟同事吵了架並且被一位客戶投訴,不知道她今天頭疼了一整天晚上幾乎都沒有吃飯,不知道她此刻還是頭疼欲裂並且非常想靜一靜。

這些你都不知道。

你只是很開心,看到她回家你就更開心了,你開始放聲的歌唱,歡快的圍著她唱歌。你媽媽終於按耐不住了,沒忍住就對於有些凶的說:「別唱了!你不知道你的嗓音很難聽嗎?」

那一刻你住嘴了。

從此你變得不太願意唱歌了,因為你怕別人討厭你。你覺得自己的嗓音很難聽,所以索性就不要唱了。你甚至開始變得很害羞,不敢跟其他的小朋友講話。

而所有的這些變化,僅僅是因為你媽媽在心情糟糕的時候那麼無心的一句斥責。

她並不知道這句話在你身上的影響,她像全世界的其他媽媽一樣對你懷揣著最美好的期望,可是她永遠都不知道一句話可以在你的心裡生根發芽,變成了一個你束縛自己的,和自己簽下的,魔鬼契約。

你上初中的那一年開始愛上了數學。

你發現數字是如此的奇妙,不管是代數、算術或者是幾何,它們的規律是如此完美,讓你在其中不能自拔。

你並沒有想爭什麼,但是在全班的第一次數學考試中,你拿了第一名。在你看著成績單驚喜不已時,老師在講台上說了這麼一句話:「數學的思維一般還是男生比較擅長,女孩子可能開始的時候成績很好,但是慢慢學到比較複雜的知識,就要落後於男生了。」

你很難過,為什麼就因為自己是女孩子,所以數學就會慢慢落後呢?

你也不懂是為什麼,但你好像真的像中了魔咒般的數學成績在初二時開始下滑。

每一次你沒有學好,你腦中便會響起老師的那一句話,然後你發現自己開始慢慢失去了對數學的興趣,甚至開始討厭數學。

直到有一天你告訴自己:女孩子的確不擅長數學,所以我還是去鑽研文學吧!

這位老師的一句偏見,再一次的,被你相信並且內化成自己的聲音。從此,你和自己,簽下了又一個魔鬼契約。

當然我可以給你講無數個這樣你和自己簽下的魔鬼契約。

這些很多的契約都是你如真理般信奉的:

「我不擅長游泳。」

「做我喜歡的事情是賺不到錢並且沒法養活自己的。」

「我如果按照最本真的自己活著,就沒有辦法承擔贍養父母的責任。」

「我如果現在不結婚就肯定嫁不出去了。」

「那麼美麗性格好又高智商的女孩子是不會喜歡我的。」

或者簡簡單單是那麼一句「我並不覺得自己是一個很值得愛的人。」

這些魔鬼契約都是以別人的無心、善意或者惡意的評價開始,以你最終把它變成自己內心的聲音結束,然後你就在不知不覺中慢慢喪失著自己的自由

所以你要如何打破這種契約呢?

永遠不要相信任何人對你的任何評價,這個人包括你自己!

因為不管別人對你的評價是好的還是不好的,那都是他們對你言行的理解。

比如你畫了一幅畫,然後有人說:哇,你畫的好美!你的畫本身並不因為她的評價而變得美了,而是你的畫在她的心中引發了她對於美的知覺。

同樣,你發現另一個看了你的畫說:我真的沒有辦法想像,你花了一個星期就畫出這麼沒有價值的東西!同樣,這個評價其實跟你的畫在你心中的價值甚至是它的實際價值都無關,這個評價僅僅說明你的畫沒有觸及到這個人覺得有價值的東西,或者僅僅是因為這個人想讓你難過(也許因為他自己根本沒有辦法畫出來!)。

你真正要問的,不是這幅畫到底美不美或者有多少價值,而是問問你自己,在繪畫的過程中你是否讓自己的生命得到了表達,延展或者綻放?你的生命在這個過程中獲得了多大程度上的滋養,才是讓你知道它的價值的評價!

別人對我們的評價或者說對我們的言行的解讀,更多的反映出了他們是誰,而不是我們是誰。

舉個很簡單的例子。

你和女朋友還有另一位你的朋友走在路上,突然間你看到了一個衣衫襤褸的賣花的小姑娘,你掏出錢包,買下了全部的花然後送給你的女朋友。

你的朋友在心裡想:他這麼做就是想在女朋友面前炫耀一下自己的大方。

你的女朋友在想:我知道他是個非常善良的人,全都買下來就是想讓小姑娘今天可以早點回家。

而賣花的小姑娘在想:他一定是很愛自己的女朋友,才買了這麼多花給她。

他們誰是對的呢?

也許都對但也可能都不對,因為你買花的真正原因,只有你一個人知道。

但有一點是可以肯定的,他們對你的行為動機的解讀,是透過了自己價值感的濾網,所以其實這些他們對你的評價,更多說明的是他們是誰,而不是你是誰。

所以當下次別人告訴你,你非常擅長演講或者你非常不擅長演講,都請你感謝他們,並且同時也積極的尋求他們的反饋。

但也請你記得,你擅不擅長演講,跟他們都沒有任何關係,因為你是流動的、發展的、變化的,所以擅長或者不擅長都不是最終的你。而最終的你,是你選擇聽從真正自己內心的聲音,去向著你想要的方向成長,並且接納此刻一切你還成長得不夠的地方。

永遠不要相信任何人對我們的任何評價,這樣的你,不會在不知不覺中跟魔鬼們簽下限制自己的契約。

夠自私 不是不為別人著想是更先想到自己


你往最遠處看,每個人都會死,在死亡這件事上,眾生平等,你沒必要在乎別人的眼光,因為他們和你一樣都在走向死亡。你只需要跟著自己的心走,去做當下最想做的事情,因為下一秒你可能要忙著做其他事情。

你往近處看,你可能下一秒就會死,在這麼短暫的一秒里,誰都沒時間關注你,你為什麼還要把這珍貴的一秒拿去考慮別人的眼光呢?你應該珍惜這一秒把現在最想做的事做到最好。


千萬不要因為別人的眼光而改變了自己的摯愛,請莫要活在別人的眼光里而失去了自己!你的感情不能貪心,也不是夢想。

所以,我們應該用心來守候屬於自己的,並不驚天動地的愛情。沒有一份愛是完美的,也沒有一份感情是毫無瑕疵的。


說完全不在乎別人的看法,那是不可能的,我們能做的只是盡量別去在乎,盡量做好自己即可。
