主題為戒酒相關，或者寫歌的人因為戒酒而產生的靈感都可以。

Dream Theater 前鼓手 Mike Portnoy 曾根據自己遵循 Twelve-step Program 十二步戒酒法的親身經歷，和樂隊其他成員共同創作了五首作品，分別發行在樂隊的五張錄音室專輯中，創作、發行的時間跨度從 2000 年至 2009 年。
這五首作品也被並稱為 The Twelve-step Suite，共計播放時長 57:16。
歌詞全部由 Mike Portnoy 創作，作曲、編曲由樂隊共同完成。

Mike Portnoy 在 2009 年完成這套組曲之後，曾想和樂隊完整演奏這套組曲，但未能實現。
在 2010 年 Mike Portnoy 離開樂隊之後，他也曾表示過對這套作品所有權的佔有。（對於樂隊來說，這套作品有點像是 Space-Dye Vest 之於 Kevin Moore）

第一首作品 "The Glass Prison" 收錄在 2002 年發行的 Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence 中，包括了 Twelve-step Program 十二步戒酒法的前三個步驟：I. Reflection, II. Restoration, III. Revelation.
第二首作品 "This Dying Soul" 收錄在 2003 年發行的 Train of Thought 中，包括了 Twelve-step Program 十二步戒酒法的第四、第五個步驟：IV. Reflections of Reality (Revisited), V. Release.
第三首作品 "The Root of All Evil" 收錄在 2005 年發行的 Octavarium 中，包括了 Twelve-step Program 十二步戒酒法的第六、第七個步驟：VI. Ready, VII. Remove.
第四首作品 "Repentance" 收錄在 2007 年發行的 Systematic Chaos 中，包括了 Twelve-step Program 十二步戒酒法的第八、第九個步驟：VIII. Regret, IX. Restitution.
最後一首作品 "The Shattered Fortress" 收錄在 2009 年發行的 Black Clouds Silver Linings 中，包括了 Twelve-step Program 十二步戒酒法的最後三個步驟：X. Restraint, XI. Receive, XII. Responsible.

一些趣事：

1994 年發行的專輯 Awake 中有一首名為 "The Mirror" 的作品，被看作是 The Twelve-step Suite 的前傳、前奏曲 (Prequel / Prelude)。在之後 The Twelve-step Suite 五首作品的歌詞中多次出現了 "The Mirror" 中的 Friend, 暗指其酗酒；也多次出現了 The Mirror，暗指自我懺悔。
"The Glass Prison" 的歌詞中直接引用了一些 Twelve-step Program 十二步戒酒法的原文，比如第一句歌詞中的 "Cunning, Baffling, Powerful" 就是引用自 "Remember we deal with alcohol - cunning, baffling, powerful."
"The Root of All Evil" 的前奏部分參照了 Pink Floyd 的作品 "Welcome to the Machine", 並且還使用了組曲中前一首 "This Dying Soul" 中的動機。
"Repentance" 中所涵括的戒酒法則是指，戒酒者需要向曾因為自己酗酒所傷害的人進行懺悔和補償。這首歌的後半段，指代了 Restitution 的主題，由 Dream Theater 邀請了眾多音樂人來獻聲「懺悔」。這些音樂人包括：Mikael ?kerfeldt, Neal Morse, Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, Jon Anderson, David Ellefson, Daniel Gildenl?w, Steve Hogarth, Chris Jericho, Corey Taylor 和 Steven Wilson.

Muse 2012年的專輯 The 2nd Law 中有兩首歌曲為貝斯手 Chris Wolstenholme 為他的酒精問題所作：Liquid State 和 Save Me.

"Save Me" is one of two songs on the album written by Chris about his alcoholism, the other being "Liquid State." He described the song as being about "having the family, the wife and the kids who, despite all the crap that I"ve put them through, at the end of it you realise they"re still there and they"re the ones who pulled you through." According to an NME article it is the first song with Chris on main vocal duty, along with "Liquid State." Chris said, "I don"t think I expected to sing it when I showed it to the other guys, but it was approached with a pretty open mind. They felt it was a big step for the band." Matt added, "I was into it because they were songs that were personal to him. It"s like this new guy - the last time I remember meeting this guy was about ten years ago. He seems to be so energised about everything. I think he almost feels like he"s woken up."

"Liquid State" is one of two songs on the album written by Chris about his struggle with alcoholism, the other being "Save Me". Chris said the song was "written about the person you become when you"re intoxicated and how the two of them are having this fight inside of you and it tears you apart".

According to some of the latest interviews, this song (Liquid State) is the heaviest song on the entire album, and has been compared to Queens of the Stone Age. It bears resemblance to the Queens of the Stone Age song "You Think I Ain"t Worth a Dollar, But I Feel Like a Millionaire".
